Thinking about all the different areas would you say it is relevant to modern ireland?

That is quite a broad question. Sounds like an essay title! What is your opinion on it?

I'll delete the other two threads you have on this.

Eh, you do know that it is in the process of being changed don't you?

Its for a debate. I just want to get some people's opinions on it
@implausible I do indeed, but that was the debate topic we were given. I think they're fixing the flaws in it, but the junior cert itself is relevant.

To me, the JC should be about two things; preparing kids for the more important LC exams, and giving them a taster of many subjects so they can decide which to start specialising in...

debate is not favoured here. some teachers feel very threatened by it.

the JC gets the students to focus on a goal, otherwise they would not take school seriously. its also a kind of rite of passage.

What does 'Modern Ireland' mean in this context?

In this case, I would define 'Modern Ireland' as "going on the internet to find people to do your homework for you."

If that be the case then the JC is becoming more relevant by the minute!

Its not homework, I do debating outside school and have my speech written. I was looking for opinions to make my speech better or for rebuttal. Since teachers are the ones running the show I though who better to ask. But its seems I'll go back to students. They seem a lot more willing to help.

Well, you should certainly always follow the help anyway. If you had wanted help from teachers who are all trolled out it would have helped to make clear what you were about. For what it's worth, I prepare people for debates (i.e. write their speeches from them) in school and if I were you I'd be tempted to challenge the seemingly lazy assumption in the title that we can talk about Modern Ireland as if there is a consensus as to what it might be. Then you can still do all the 'not fit for purpose' and 'knowledge economy' stuff.

What about having an opinion yourself? Surely that's the point?

Q.Is the junior cert relevant to modern Ireland?
    A+
    A. Yes, I think the junior cert is irrelevant to modern Ireland.

The only opinion that matters, is yours!! I presume you have done the Junior Cert, so you should have an opinion and that's what they want, not ours.

For what it's worth you could take it subject by subject... ask your maths teacher how they think it's relevant, if you say it's for a debate first, then I'm sure they wouldn;t mind giving you their 2cent..

You could also take the exam process itself (the 2 odd weeks in June) and consider how that's relevant to modern life. Work/Family/Society..

You could also consider if it was relevant to the Ireland of the past, how has ireland changed since the JC (or inter cert as it was previously known) was introduced.

How would you define modern ireland... technology/social interaction/economic problems/migration.

My opinion... is the 16A bus relevant to modern Ireland? Is Jedward relevant to modern Ireland? Are wind turbines relevant to modern Ireland? ...

Relevance is a subjective term.. gods make their own importance etc..

I suppose if anyone could define what modern ireland is or aspires to be, it would have to be the president of the nation... Could be a few bonus points if you could quote from michael d higgins' inaugural speech...

Thanks for taking the time out to answer this, really gave me food for thought. Much appreciated
