Another Rent Relief Query

    Hi folks,

I have been renting since October 2010, but not in the same property - my job moves me around the country every 6 months.

Looking at the changes to the last budget, it states that claimants who were not renting at 7 December 2010 and who subsequently entered into a rental agreement will not be able to claim relief. Does that mean I will only be covered for my first agreement for 6 months or can I continue to claim for following agreements also?

Also, while still tax resident in Ireland earlier this year, I was living and paying rent in the UK for 5 months. Can I claim relief for this also or is it not covered?

Thanks a million for any assistance.

    Ah come on!

Are you saying I'm not entitled to claim rent allowance post April 2011 (the date I moved)?

That's correct. The rent relief is not due in respect of any new agreements entered into after 07/12/10

Sorry Gerry but you've got the wrong end of the stick completely there.

    From Revenue.ie (http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/credits/rent-credit.html)
"Tax years 2011 to 2017 inclusive

Credit for rent paid will be withdrawn on a phased basis over the next 7 years. To see the maximum amount of the credit that will be due, see Leaflet IT 1.
The credit for the years 2011 onwards applies to individuals who were renting a propety on 7 December 2010. No credit is due to individuals who began renting after 7 December 2010."

So, anyone who had commenced renting property and was entitled to the credit at 7 December 2010 is entitled to the credit for as long as they continue renting (until it is phased out).

Thanks guys for responses. The wording of it is a bit unclear to me hence why I was looking for opinions.

Began renting or began renting at your current property? I wonder did they do this on purpose to confuse people!

It's not confusing or vague at all.

What part of "renting A PROPERTY on 7/12/2010" is confusing? It literally couldn't be more clear!

Christ - no need to snap.

It is the following line which confused me. "No credit is due to individuals who began renting after 7 December 2010."

Steady pal, I'm not snapping! ;)

I still don't see what's confusing though, one either began renting on or before 7/12/10, or afterwards...
