Old books

A family member has about 200 very old books, dating back to the 1920's maybe older. They've asked me to enquire about selling them. I don't have a clue about antiques but said I'd help out as there's a % of the sale in it for me :D

I had a look on eBay for a few of the books and some of them are going in the range of €10. I'm unsure about selling them on eBay as none of the books I saw had any bids on them, there may not be a market for them.

Does anyone know of any antique shops in the Dublin area that specialises in old books or any shop that would take them? We also have an old painting or print of James Connolly, apparently the frame is beautiful, I've yet to see it.

I'd appreciate any help advice anyone could give me.

Unless they are very unusual you won't get much for them from a dealer but Chapters on Parnell Street do buy all kinds of everything - but don't pay much. It's either them, eBay or even Adverts.ie. Why don't you post some details here, with some pics, and we might be able to point out any goodies? :)

    Chapters Bookstore,
    Ivy Exchange, Parnell Street, Dublin.1.
    Tel: (01) 872 0773. Fax: (01) 872 3044
    Website: www.chapters.ie

The "Who's Who 1966" was the only one that I thought might have any value but Kenny's (Galway) - not noted for being cheap - have it on sale at €13.46. http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?kn=118th+annual+edition&tn=who%27s+who+1966&x=0&y=0

Condition is everything too, unless it's an original by Shakespeare or some other notable. Sorry!

Thanks for that. TBH I didn't expect any of the books to be worth much if anything. As there's a lot of books they might sell for a couple of Euro at a car boot sale or maybe as a lot on adverts?

Car boot sales you will always sell books at for som ereason..dont go crazy with teh asking prices.
Adverts is a pain in the hole..people make ridiculous offers to force the price down then they dont show up or answer PMs.

with old books to be of any interest ,you should first check if any are first editions/or of special interest, most book dealers will buy first editions, and as for the special interest books sell them to a person or people who have a direct interest, for instance a book on golf to a golfer/or club.i am lucky to have picked up a book by mrs gaskell called the life of charlotte bronte a new edition published in 1866.and its worth money to bronte fans,

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to catalogue them and see exactly what there is.

I've discovered since they have a few more items that might be worth something...

A picture of Arthur Griffith, not sure if it's a print or painting, it's in a lovely frame.
The Rose Chess set (link), after some research online they might be worth a few euro.
A Sobell radio FMG708, have been unable to get a picture of it online or find out anything about it but other Sobell radio's seem to be worth something.

There's also other stuff that I need to have a look at. I've never been into antique's or old stuff but after seeing all this stuff it's really interesting :)

rose chess set in a box if its lead its worth £59 UK

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,549 ✭✭✭✭Judgement Day

I like the chess set - never seen one like it until tonight and now I've seen two! There's one on eBay here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/The-Rose-Antique-Lead-Chess-Set-VGC-all-pieces-box-present-/200675231395?pt=UK_Toys_Games_Games&hash=item2eb92d06a3#ht_500wt_1202 and although there's no bid on it yet, it should go. That would definitely be worth putting into a sale or eBay.

You could do worse than check them out against Abe Books http://www.abebooks.co.uk/ but remember the prices are what dealers are looking for, and probably way higher than you would be able to get for them.

Did you edit your post after a moderator edited yours as it was against the charter rules?

I will consult with the other moderators. If I do find out you edited this post after a moderator edited it originally I will discuss with my co-mod to see if you circumvented the charter and are still intending on selling this book on thread. Fair warning.

www.bookfinder.com is the best site to value books.

Make sure when you value the books you put in the correct year of publication as a book can be reprinted many times.

I do a little dealing on the side...PM me if you need any help.

I think it's time for you to leave this forum. You have not only disregarded my warning below but after consulting with arnhem44 who edited your original post and made you aware of our forum charter you ignored it and blatantly edited his warning again. I do believe you are trying to sell on this forum and as you are not engaging with any of the moderator comments and warnings I have no choice but to remove your access to the Collectibles and Antiques Forum (and Militaria sub-forum). This ban will be active for 21 days after which you may return. However, should you continue disregarding our warnings and our charter your next ban will be permanent.

    Hi,
    http://www.rareandrecent.com/
Before doing anything rash, contact the person above... He is excellent at valuing books and hasdone a few gooduns for me. E-mail him the name, author, publisher and date of printing and he wont be long getting back to you! There is a whole subculture out there of people who collect specialist books.

I volunteer in a charity shop..

Over the last few years I've learnt a lot about antiques..never thought it would be me but I've really enjoyed it.

Usually I google first, using google images a fair bit, not much use for books though.

For books I've used Mealy's in Castlecomer Kilkenny, literally arrived with a crate of books and they know within seconds whether any of them are worth anything. You'd have to talk to them about charges. I found them very helpful.

What I've learnt about books: check to see if it is 1st edition, if it is damaged, mildew or scribbled on value drops right down. If it is signed by author or illustrator value may go way up :-)

Prints/Paintings, I've used Adams, again check with them for charges.

What I've learnt about prints/paintings: Use a magnifying glass, check frame, back, everywhere for written details. Damage, mildew may bring value down but not necessarily. Don't roll it up :o Just because it looks ugly as hell doesn't mean it's not worth a fortune. Don't just guess the price, it could be really worth getting it checked out.

    Have fun researching and learning..
