its very easy to get the train from liverpool to manchester, trains every 20mins or so during the day, takes about 45mins and can cost as low as £4 one-way despending how far ahead you buy your tickets (only can buy up to early feb as yet) http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/timesandfares/Liverpool/MAN/030212/1200/dep

i have stayed in the international hotel before, its right across the road from manchesters biggest railway station picadilly, the twins rooms there are decent, good deal for the price, there are loads of places to go in manchester, its a bigger city than liverpool, the cheaper bars/clubs are located near the university down by deansgate, a list of the more upmarkets bars and clubs can be found http://www.manchesterbars.com/top10.htm

yeah train goes from piccadilly to the airport, fairly regularly but just check beforehand as sometimes on sundays in the UK they do work on the rails so have buses instead.

the imperial war museum north is good and the lowry museum is in salford (both near Old Trafford) you can get there handy on the tram.
There are a few other museums too if that's your thing, science museum and museum of the city (urbus?).
