Hi there. Just got a quote for €350 to install an aerial that will allow me to watch both saoirview & freeview.

Considering I have no chimney and there is a galvanised aerial bracket already installed on the back of the house and the house is wired through smarthomes for aerial points. Do yee think this is a bit expensive - because I do. Maybe I'm missing something you guys can point out to me.

    I appreciate all replies, thanks

is it just for an aerial?

or does it include satellite dish and receivers ?

by freeview do you mean terrestrial from the North or Wales?

No satellite, dish or receivers (built Into TVs)

Just the aerials and installation fees (said possibly a booster)

And yes im in Monaghan so digital freeview from NI

    You will probably need:

    2 aerials
    Diplexer
    Masthead amp and Power supply

    and possibly need:
    Distribution Amplifier.
Saorview box if your tv isn't new.

Tell us more of what is involved and we'll have a better indication of the price, but even if its all thats in the first list above with labour and VAT, it's not a million miles out of the way.

Hi Avns, thanks for the reply. The TVs are all brand new. I'm just sceptical as he give me a rough estimate of €200 last week but he arrived now and said €350.

He seems legit and I have heard he's the best around by many people but just hope he's not milking me for more.

best around lol it's only an aerial.
you could probably just fit it in your attic and do it yourself for 50 quid.

The €200 might be on the assumption that it could be done with one aerial and he may have found it needed two with a diplexer to join them. Did you try haggling with him?

You possibly could....... if you knew how, knew what equipment you needed and how to put it all together.

But if you don't and you take into consideration the cost of the materials / equipment, labour and the other business overheads, including insurance, van, vat, etc, etc. then you will see that perhaps the figure of €350 might not be that far off. You will also have a warranty on the work you get done.

In my opinion, depending on the number of aerials and other equipment needed, the €350 is not too far off the mark for a registered revenue compliant contractor / installer.

What was the original quote based on? That's a helluva jump to €350.

I rang him last week and just explained what I was looking for. He arrives at the house and I ask him how much - he says bout €350 and I said you said €200 last week and he said I use quality aerials and I need two and some other box in the attic.

I don't mind paying a man to doña good job but I did think the jump was a bit much. He's been here since 9:30 so I'll see how many hours he put in at it.

surely DIY would be worth a shot ...
even if you just bought a 10 euro 10 element aerial (or one for each group)... and a couple of meters of cable ... connect it up in front of the tv and wave it around to see if you get a signal ... if you do ...take it from there , or ask on this board .
attic might work ...chances are the cable ends are just lying in the attic ready for connection ...

There's nothing wrong with paying for a decent install by someone who knows what they're doing, knows the local area & will stand over their work.

I'm in the Monaghan area myself but I honestly don't know what the typical Saorview/Freeview setup would set you back atm. My own diy investigations (& looking at neighbours aerials) would indicate that for my area at least, 2 fairly high gain aerials are needed & possibly mast head amplification, though I've seen some very high gain aerials on tall masts in some places.

The Freeview signal increase at ASO should certainly simplify that side of things & Clermont Carn reception should also be improved.

Where are you located i.e. where is The Back'a Be'yond? Which Freeview transmitter are you hoping to receive from?

Not for Freeview Reception you won't.

Even for Saorview more than half of households would need a properly installed outdoor aerial. Note that almost all the "outdoor" aerials sold by (large*) retailers are only indoor attic quality.

(*Excluding the getting rare "proper" retailers that also install aerials and are not simply box shifters but know their stuff)

I'm glad I live close enough to a saorview transmitter if its that price to get an aerial installed. I used an empty can and some coax cable as an aerial. Connected one end into the soarview receiver and moved the can around till i got a signal. Im getting 90% signal, watching rte 2 hd with no glitches.
It was a pricey can though, cost me 80centicon7.gif

It's not just one aerial for your Local TV. It's a 2nd, probably expensive high gain aerial and mast amp, with likely filtered group combiner so as to have Freeview (a "Foreign" service). So it's of course going to cost more.
