Hello, I have a problem with my car at the moment and hopefully somebody here can give me some advice. I have a 01 Ford Focus, which is currently stuck in 1st gear.
I can still move the gear stick freely, but is very loose and it dosent find any other gears. My landlord had a look and said the links are gone? Or something like that, I dont have a clue about cars!
Does anybody know whats going on? More importantly, what is it gonna cost me!
    Thanks for your help!

Pretty common issue with the Focus, if you lift up the plastic trim and gaitor around the gear handle you will probably find that one of the links has popped off. You can put it back on and secure it with a cable tie or similar as a temporary measure but the cables will eventually need to be changed. About €40 for secondhand cables and €50 to fit them.

Fantastic answer George thank you very much for that! Thats great news, I thought it would be a lot more then that :-)

Is this difficult to do? Would it be possible for me to do this job myself? I dont really have a whole lot of cash at the moment, but no expertise in car maintenance either!

    Thanks again for your answer!

It isn't that difficult to do once you have the right tools and equipment but probably beyond the scope of a total novice.

The cable tie bodge should last for a while anyway until you get the cash together to have it fixed properly.
