Will it ever happen or will the oil companies somehow scupper it.

Governments would be more likely to scupper it, they would lose much more than the oil companies. Perhaps a "don't ever release that 300mpg car" tax would be introduced.

Its a sad thing to say... But there would be a lot of truth in what you say

Yeah Gov's car policies tend to be very hypocritical.

They tax big 4x4s cos they say they want us to drive small, less polluting cars. As soon as we are all in small cars, they'll tax the sh1t outta them.

I too think this 300mpg technology is a long long way off, if we will ever see it.

My guess is that we'll have stopped using petrol (oil) as a primary source of fuel long before 300 mpg becomes achievable. Not because the oil will run out -which it never will- but because it'l be so expensive to but a litre of refined fuel at the pumps that we'll have to switch to alternatives by necessity rather than choice.

Still nice to see research projects like this pushing things forward one bit at a time:D

    This is so true.

We are seeing our governor shooting themselfs in a foot with co2 tax system. Tax wil go up madly as they lossing money, but you all know the story already anyway.

Yup, save the planet! But don't forget to fork out alot of money for govermemt. What enviroment? You are drunk lads, just pay the tax...

I don't see why our government would. They could simply increase fuel tax proportionately to keep revenue the same and, with reduced oil imports, it's win-win. That said, 300mpg at a steady slowish cruise is a very different thing from 300mpg in stop-start traffic.

Governments will just increase taxation on fuel to compensate for increased efficency, if the national car fleet got up to say an average of 100mpg then the governments would just drive Petrol and Diesel up to €5.50/litre or €25/gallon.

There will be in the region of a 5c/litre tax increase in the budget anyway it seems.
