Planning to trade my 05 Tucson CRDi (180K kms) shortly and looking for a diesel estate. Thinking on the lines of Volvo V50, Mondeo estate, Citroen C5 estate.
Currently driving about 50K/year and need something reliable and economical. 2008 or newer and I have max €15k to spent along with my Tucson.
Any opinions on the above or any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

    Possibly a new i40 estate?

Given you are trading in a Hyundai and paying the balance you may get a bit of a deal.

I'd say you would have to add a bit to the budget. I read today Hyundai are bringing in a good finance deal in the new year so may be worth investigating

In with the Octavia estate diesel. Although the i40 is a really nice looking car with a healthy warranty. Think they start from €24k new.

Get the Volvo. Won't regret it. Hadn't had any problems for three years and 96k kilometres.

they sure do but I think Op may be able to cut a bit of a deal given he is trading in a hyundai.

It may be worth increasing the budget if it is possible.

Nice car, nice warranty and good long term bet I reckon.

Lot's of good used cars too but just thought I'd suggest an i40 for something a bit different.

    This too

Why are you trading in your car? Surely there is plenty more miles in it? That's a lot cheaper than 15k you're spending.

Though that's my mindset about these things.

I like the look of the current citreons that are out.

If I were you, and there was no problems with my current car, I would think twice before selling a car that will only be turning 7 years old next year, with that milage on it.

Wow good find on that Seat, they look good value surprised I haven't seen more on the road. I still prefer the i40 though!

Great answers so far and thanks for your inputs. The I40 is very attractive but might be a bit of a stretch. Will check them out. I'd never even seen an Exeo, must check these out too. I forgot to mention that I tow a trailer on occasion so something for that job too.

With my own car hitting 180k it's due timing belt, the clutch isn't as good as it was, new battery needed for the winter and probably a few more bits required in the short time. Plus the "novelty" has finally worn off the Tucson.

That would probably cost you about a thousand to get the belt done, and fluids + what have you, but doubt it would cost more. If the novelty has worn off, perhaps get it professionally valeted and waxed? Perhaps source a new interior?

And if you're towing... Well, I've always been a sucker for:

barura, I think I'll skip the Toyota, hoping for something with a bit more mpg.
Sabonek: The Volvo is still my first choice unless somebody somebody tells me they're useless. The I40 is still a bit of a stretch.

Any opinions on this Citroen C5? http://www.autotrader.ie/search/Citroen/C5/Tourer-1/201111201674376/advert?channel=CARS

I don't think the Volvo is useless but it's considerably smaller than anything else that you are looking at. That Citroen is nice enough but has almost 100k km on it, If you bought that in two years it would have near 200k km on it. You could be looking at big bills then. As earlier i40 still for me. :)

Edit: Just seen the Citroen again, ok it's 84k km but still in two years time 190k km is high enough.

Hard to argue with a Mondeo estate, huge and with the right spec (Titanium/Ghia) handsome and very well specced.

Renault Megane DCI Sports Tourer Estate, we get 58mpg with it, very nippy, light steering, great storage, its excellent.

Expensive for what they are even if that is the high spec. 52K miles on it already too. Could get a new i40 for 2 grand more with 5 year warranty.
