To put it bluntly, chalk and cheese.

What will it be used for? For basis web browsing on the couch, get an iPad. If you want do anything like photo editing, write a word document, download films or pretty much anything that requires typing something longer than a text message, get a Netbook.

As an owner of an iPad, it really is just for lazily browsing the web, listening to some music or playing App's. Its not a serious device for word processing, email etc, as much as Apple want you to believe it is.

    What Ironclaw said.

Also, I take you've already a PC/laptop?? You'll need something to sync your music/videos/photos to your iPad. It's not a case of downloading them the way you would on a PC*.

*Obviously, you can download via iTunes, but I'm talking the less expensive kind of downloading! ;)

You can back up your photos etc in iCloud too, which is a good feature. If you've an extensive collection of music/video (that don't conform to Apple's rules) then it mightn't be much use that way.

I currently have a couple of laptops and I'll be buying an iPad 2 in the near future.

    Why?

I want something lightweight and with enough space for my music (64GB model) and some videos, games, but mainly for skyping and browsing too. Everything else, I can do on my laptop if I need to.

By download films, I guess you mean illegally. Because you can download movies fine from iTunes straight to the device.

Also you have Airplay, Air Video for playing video.

There are a number of photo editing apps. Sure there isn't a photoshop, but for 90% of the kind of photo editing you need there are apps available. I use Procreate, PhotoGene, PhotoPad and Snapseed.

As for writing, Pages works fine. Keyboard is just a case of getting used to the device. Either thumb keyboard or use the full screen. If you really need tactile feedback you can buy a Keyboard docking station or Apple bluetooth keyboard (works fine).

Anything you would need a PC for vs an iPad, the netbook is unlikely to cut it either.

iPad2 vs Netbook is that it is always on, better battery life. You don't have to worry about overheating, cloud backups/downloads (pull apps/songs/movies as needed over the wireless), no virus worries, doesn't feel like you are looking through a keyhole when reading the screen.

Personally I can't see the appeal of netbooks at all. To me it is dated technology.

    +1 to that.

There is NO issue (other than simple personal preference) with typing longer documents on the iPad, as I've said on another thread: I've written 4000 words assignments for my degree on the iPad. I had an Acer Aspire One Netbook (the 9" screen version) before getting the iPad, and I much prefer the iPad. It might just be my memory getting old, but I'm pretty sure the keyboard on the netbook was about the same size as on the iPad, so it's down to whether you like the tactile nature of the keys, rather than simply choosing because of a perceived size difference.
