    Hi,

recently my laptop has been freezing and running slow while making noise when i run windows. I googled the problem and most suggestions say its my hard drive and that the only fix is to replace it. after maybe 20 minutes of leaving the laptop alone it seems to run alright.

however on the same laptop i'm running linux and its not having ANY problems like that. both OS use the same partitioned hard drive. i find it hard to believe that its damaged on the windows partition because i'm assuming it would effect the linux partition also(after all its only a virtual partition, still the same hard drive). i can access the windows partition from linux to retrieve files etc. and it has no performance issues

i haven't tried anything like a reinstall or a reformatting of the disk yet, because i'm afraid doing something that is high in performance may take forever(or even freeze and cause me to have a bigger problem)

    any suggestions?

I've seen this happen before, the problem with the drive is on the Windows partition but it is still damaged, its only a matter of time before the linux install looks to be broken if the hard disk is dying. Try running a hard drive diagnostics tool, Seagate for DOS is a good one, works with all drives. If any errors occur replace the drive :)
