Bike for work

OP, do you work in Forestry? Why do you want a mountain bike for commuting?

I would not recommend either of those bikes. For that budget, I would suggest looking for a second hand hybrid.

Those two bikes would not be capable of any sort of rigorous mountain biking & would IMHO fall into the BSO category of bikes.

I wouldn't buy the second one and certainly wouldn't want to use it for actual mountain biking. However, I wouldn't take the first one of your hands even if you paid me, total crap.

If you want to go mountain biking buy something of decent quality because it'll have to stand up to fair abuse. If you just want the bike for getting to work (presumable on roads) get a road bike (racing bike) or a maybe a hybrid of some sort. Either way you'll probably have to up you budget a wee bit to get anything decent new but then again there are some crazy deals second-hand.
