3 of us headed out again shooting today after a few pheasants. Wasn't a bad cool morning so it was good to be out walking around.
As soon as we picked up the third lad with us we glassed a cock pheasant in a stubble field a few hundred yards from his house. We parked up, loaded up and got the dogs out (2 cockers and a springer) and walked around all the stubble leaving the field where he was till last. al we met were 2 hens. When we got to where we spotted him he was gone into cover and one of the cockers had a scent and took off. we got to the end of the ditch though and she was gone ahead 50 yards but came back on the whistle. We regrouped either side of the field and off the cocker set again breaking cover and at the other side of the ditch where one of the lads were nabbed him with one shot and the cocker retrieved. One in the bag.

We moved on then to another area we recently got deer shooting permission off where we spotted two cocks the last day. we spotted one in the field behind a house but didnt bother with him since it was too close to the house.
Off down the narrow farm road we went when i shouted to stop at a gate. in the corner of the field was 5 deer. 4 fallow does and a buck with only 1, 2 point antler, all as black as the ace of spades. Of course we sat there only having shotguns, but its great to know the farmer was telling the truth about having a good few deer he wanted shot. Another mornings stalk :)

We stopped up for a while and had a bit of lunch down the road from our next spot and full up again we headed up a big climb of a glen where one of the lads missed one last week. Up at the top along the edge of the plantation hollie gave a bark which always means a bird and a cock broke out across the plantation and out infront of me. I fired and was just infront of the bird, but one again just my luck the shot turned her back around and he circled me and after a slowly realising the gun doesnt pump itself :o:rolleyes: i let off another shot as i was turning and nailed him :D cock number two in the bag. my third shot of the season and second cock so i was happy out :)
Really liking the gun and it seems to fit me like a glove. every time i shoulder it both beads are lined up.

the one on the right is the one i got. He wasn't too badly sized.
We went into another spot and the I couldn't believe the sound and the amount of blue jay we saw. hopping along from tree to tree as the dogs hunted below. Are they protected?

We saw a good few more cocks and one of the lads only got one shot off but no luck. good signs seen so many birds though :)

On the way back dropping one of the lads home we spotted a stag out in one of our other permissions that we haven't been out on this year yet. We didn't even stop when we spotted him and stayed going dropped the lad off and into pick up the .243. We didn't think he'd stay there as he was walking a bit but we had planned to park in the farm and come back along the fields but he was nowhere to be seen.
Off we went up the road to a better few fields surrounded by a decent sized wood. we could drive the jeep up most of the way and walk the last 300 yards through the wood and smaller field. we had about 30 mins of last light left. We got to the gap and Der stood there with the binos looking out along the ditch, i looked to his left and there about 70 yards was a small pricket. I tapped him on the shoulder and pointed him out. As Der turned his head he spotted us and stood there staring. He stepped over the fence which he hot and left off a rattle, deer didnt move. he used the stake as a rest and sent a 100gr .243 bullet through its neck. down on the spot.
Should be a nice tasty fella :D

So i got a bird, the other lad got a bird and he got a deer so we were al happy :D

To put a downer on the day when we got back to the jeep i put the gun in and was dying to use the nearest lavatory and left the knife and binos on the roof and of course jumped into the jeep and forgot about them:( going down the wood path we herd the binos fall off the roof to a soft landing on the high grass, but there was no sign of the knife.we drove back up and i walked infront of the jeep with the lights on the whole way down but we didn't find it :(
hopefully we'l spot it when its bright.
