    Hi Guys,

Ive been living the the UK over a year now and i got myself a Provisional License here, you dont need to do a theory test to get one, you simply pay £50 and apply for it.

Im moving back home soon so my question is can i use that License in Ireland the same as an Irish Provisional License, and will i have to get my theory test done before my practical test, or is this some kind of loop hole?

Unfortunately no. The UK Provisional is not valid in Ireland. You'll have to start from scratch in Ireland .i.e Theory Test, Eyesight report, 12 EDT lessons etc...

The only loop hole is to pass the UK test.

You should be able to get lessons and pass in a few weeks, if you've driving experience before hand.

Yes its petty easy to get your license over here compared to Ireland, and much cheaper, i think...

It £22 an hour for a lesson, £50 for your provisional license and £60 for your practical test for your full license, whats the prices in Ireland?

About €30-€40 per lesson (usually one hour, price varies with instructor), €15 for a 2 year learner permit (BUT you have to pay €40.60 for the theory test, plus about €15 for the eyesight test from an opticians), and €85 for the full licence test.

Which seems like a lot, especially those who obtained their learner permit after 4th April 2011, which means they are required to do 12 compulsory lessons, but in comparison to the actual costs of driving (insurance, fuel, tax, cost of buying the car [if applicable]) they are a drop in the ocean!

OP as the above posters said, either try and pass your full test before moving to Ireland, or move to Ireland and start from scratch (by doing the theory test, applying for your learner permit, taking 12 compulsory lessons and doing your driving test).

A full UK drivers licence be ok in Ireland but think you will need an Irish provisional licence to legally learn to drive here in Ireland.

It's classed as an EU licence so once you have a full UK licence you no longer need to go through the provisional route to passing your Irish test, you can transfer over a UK one to an Irish one for a fee, but I heard that the UK licence is valid until you're 70 so you don't have to go renewing (and paying for) it every 10 years like in Ireland

Yup, but you need to trade it if you're moving back here. Think you can use it for a year is all.

Are you sure? I've seen Irish/EU people getting in trouble on Road Wars and the like for being there on an EU licence over a year. Also have a mate in the UK who says he's looking to trade as he's there a year and needs to.
