Wouldn't have said anything until you used 'that' word...

Avatar is visually grandiose but lacks any real emotional substance or unique plot point.

There’s already a lengthy thread about what Blu-rays are worth getting:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055936504

And since we're talking about Avatar: I love Dances with Wolves as well and Avatar shamelessly rips it off. I'd much rather watch the original than James Cameron's big blustering and totally soulless sci-fi take on the same story.

    Dances with Wolves + Smurfs + 3d = Avatar

    Blade Runner
    Band of Brothers
    All the Pixar films
    Apocalypto
    How to train your Dragon
    Kung Fu Panda
    Inception

Off the top of my head these all look beautiful on blu ray. As for 3D if you can get the Shrek films they look great.

The Dark Knight; those imax scenes just blow me away.
Terminator 2 looks amazing on blu-ray; so much better than the DVD.
As said, AVATAR looks spectacular in 2D/Bluray. I can't vouch for the 3DTVs.
It's an old blu but it looks amazing - Casino Royale.
Definitely Pixar movies all look awesome in HD.

but ya SP mentioned the bluray thread which is full of great recommendations.

The landscapes in 127 hours are fantastic on blu-ray.

The Dark Knight is very average on Bluray, soft image and very noticeable edge-enhancement.

Inception has a very blurry, dull picture. There's no detail in dark areas. If you love the film then great, but it is definitely not reference/demo material. Same with all Nolan films, ugly cinematography.

Band of Brothers looked better on HD-DVD, Spielberg deliberately shot on grainy film stock but the great unwashed don't like grain so the Bluray has plenty of DNR and lacks the fine detail of the HD-DVD.

Terminator 2 on Bluray is complete garbage. They've been throwing out release after release of this movie all using the same soft old master. Again, one of my favourite action movies but definitely not reference material or an example of the best that Bluray can do.

You can't go wrong with the Pixar movies as reference material.

Yeah, Inception on Blu-ray looks very waxy. I don't remember it looking like that in the cinema. The IMAX scenes in TDK look great though. So I'd blame it on the DNR monkeys at Warners rather than the cinematography. Having said that, Nolan is colour blind, which goes a long way toward explaining the style of cinematography in his films.

Yeah, he really is colour blind.

Yeah, he really is colour blind.

wow, never knew that, goes a long way to explaining some of the lack of focus on colour in his pictures alright

Of the Blu-ray films I've watched the most visually impressive are Avatar and the the last Star Trek movie released in 2009. Even if you're not a trek fan it's definitely worth a watch just to see how well it looks in 1080.

Christ, don't mince your words Voodu Child. (paraphrasing "see your suggestions? complete garbage") :( Well, that's the first time I've heard Nolan's films having ugly cinematography. I've only ever heard the exact opposite. In any case, the shot where Batman's standing over the wreckage/rubble (which was shot in IMAX) is absolutely beautiful.

Black Hawk Down is stunning. The Thing looks brilliant imo as well.
    Attenborough's Planet Earth/Life..

em.... The Fall is really gorgeous as well.

Any word on how Jurassic Park on blu-ray looks?

The biggest problem with the Dark Knight on Blu-Ray is how much better those IMAX scenes look. It's distracting, if ultimately worth it for the quality you end up with for those prettier moments. Still, they could probably have done without the random city inserts that ever so briefly switch to IMAX format. I've seen the film in IMAX, and would still make the same criticisms about it.

Animation is definitely the best Blu-Ray proving ground. Pixar, naturally, are top. I have a few anime BRs that look absolutely stunning - the superb Summer Wars and the two brilliant new Evangelion movies.

Outside that, Planet Earth and Life (even more so the latter, nearly!) are just extraordinarily gorgeous. Se7en stands out as a particularly pretty addition to the connection. I haven't really dabbled in older movies on BR, but got a dual format copy of Harakiri in the post the other day that I really can't wait to watch :)

Frozen Planet which started on bbc a few weeks ago is even more gorgeously filmed than those two series, and thats saying a lot, it's going to be unbelievable on Blu-ray I reckon.

Read this thread earlier and then came back to say to get Planet Earth but its already been said now.

I haven't watched a lot of blu rays but it was easily the most amazing.

    Apocalypse was class too.

Yeah haven't watched it yet, and probably just gonna wait til the HD version gets released!

Most importantly, it better have production diaries. I'll be perfectly honest, I get as much of a kick out of them on the Life discs as the show itself. Production pr0n at its finest.

I'm pretty sure it will, the last ten minutes of each show on tv is basically a segment of the production diaries, I think they did the same thing when Planet Earth and Life were first screened. I agree they're just as good as the main show, i presume there'll be more in depth ones when it finally makes it to BR.

Im not knocking the movies themselves, but just in the context of the OPs question...if you've got yourself a brand new TV, brand new Bluray player, the works, Inception just isn't the kind of movie to make you go 'wow, so this is what it's all about'. imo anyway. Its just too soft and dark for most of the movie.

Rubbish :pac: Sorry, its true. They used an old master, just a dull uninspiring picture. The other two movies in the set are rubbish looking too.

Amazon is the best by far. You really should wait until Black Friday and buy a load of blu rays off of Amazon.com for cheap prices.

it's the first day of christmas shopping in the States (where all the shops make a profit and hence go "in the black"). I dunno about region encoding for blu-rays/ps3s etc so it'd be worth making sure everything's cool before plonking down the cash

Well Life, Frozen Planet and Planet Earth are probably three of the greatest series television has ever produced.
