Going for a 2008 car. Thinking of 2.2 Cdti Civic or 2.0 Octavia elegence.
    I think both are 140bhp.
    any opinions?

The civic engine had some problems in the accord didn't it?

I'd still take the civic though. Or something else

your post suggests that you you would take a car that you had doubts about over an octavia.
    can you clarify/

I'd much prefer a civic to an Octavia if it had to be either/or
The 2.0 in the oct wouldn't be a dead cert with regards to reliability either

Octavias are awesome and all, the boot is indeed quite big.

So are you saying both these cars have issues.
    have you run both?

    Thanks

Friend of mine has the Civic 2.2 Cdti and it's a nippy car. Feels faster than my equivalent Accord. I guess the Civic would also be nippier than the Octavia too due to body weight.

He's never had any issues with his but some of them had an issue with a slipping clutch. This is covered by warranty.

The clutch is not the problem on the Civic, it's the DMF.

OP, if you are looking at the Octavia then the 1.9 TDi is probably a better choice over the 2.0 TDi. 2.0 TDi assuming it is the PD engine is not that reliable. Oil pumps and injector issues are common resulting is large repair bills. 2.0 TDi CR engine I don't think appeared until the facelifted Octavia appeared in 2009. 1.9 TDi is old and not very refined but it is a well proven engine with simple mechanics, if you want a bit more power then I suggest getting it remapped.

Other options would be a Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi Titanium from the UK. Can be bought fairly cheap these days too

Assuming that you are going 2008 due to the lower road tax, there are may bargains to be had on pre-2008 cars too.You might be able to pick up a 2007 car for far less than the equivalent 2008.

The road tax system could very well change in the up coming budget back to the older cc system too.

Pretty sure it's the clutch. They upgraded it on later models. Did the Cdti have a DMF?
