when you can hear the people with headsets (when your not wearing a headset just playing from the tv) is that how it sounds when you're wearing a headset or does it sound clearer? thanks

    depends on alot of things.

If you are listening to chat through your tv, it'll always sound terrible.

If the people using mics are using the mic on the Eye toy thing, it'll sound crap, especially when they've got the settings arseways and you hear an echo of the gameplay.

Alot of bluetooth headsets sound like crap, and sometimes give that feedback noise. The Eye toy also does that feedback noise as it's usually set near the tv speakers.

The connection can also affect chat. But usually it just makes it choppy, or intermittent... it doesn't affect the quality of what manages to get through.

Last but not least. Make sure you've set up your headset with the PS3. If not, you'll be hearing the chat as if it was being played through the tv, and not how it should sound. Go to System Settings, and Accesory Settings, and select your mic.

Every game allows a certain amount of bandwidth for game chat. The higher the bandwidth, the higher quality of in game chat. Games with smaller numbers of players can allow a higher amount of chat bandwidth per person, where as it is the opposite for larger multiplayer games.
An example would be the quality of chat for Gears of War and MW2 or 3. In gears you sound perfect, but in MW3 you (I) sound like a robot.

However, party chat has its own bandwidth allocation on top of this and as such, you will have a consistent high quality chat with it.

    Hope this helps.
