You will always have to declare it to an insurance company that you have had a driving conviction so it stays with you forever.

Some companies like FBD for example wont quote you if you ever had a driving conviction, irregardless of the time frame.

dont they have to quote you a price (even if it is a silly amount )

EU laws etc etc ... I could be terribly wrong and if so I apologise.

Not quiet. An insurance company can still refuse you cover but must give you a reason. See below:

"Individual insurers have the right to refuse you cover, but they must provide you with a reason for the refusal should you ask for one. However, even though you have been refused cover, you are entitled to go to the Declined Cases Committee of the Irish Insurance Federation who will obtain an insurance quotation for you. In order for the Committee to consider your case you must first have sought and been refused quotations in writing from at least three insurers."

If by "your record", you mean the NVDF system used by the Motor Tax Offices, then, yes, the fact that you had a conviction for X remains on your driving licence record forever (along with all the relevant details like dates, reason, etc.). It just doesn't remain stamped on your actual (physical) licence forever.

In terms of insurance, you're supposed to declare the fact that you had one to them. However, most insurers are somewhat reasonable about it (meaning they aren't going to see someone that had a single conviction 5 or 10 years ago in the same light as someone who is going back on the road right after their period of disqualification has expired).

    Regards,
    John.

Stay on your record. Of course it does and chances are that you'll get refused from most insurance companies. although there are a couple of bougie ones out there thatll insure your wreckless driving machines.
