My friends 06 1.8 petrol avensis ground to a halt as he changed down going uphiil.
He could'nt get it out of gear running or not, it had to be dragged onto the recovery truck with its wheels locked.
It sounds to me like the gearbox or diff has seized and have suggested to fit a used g/box .
Has anyone got any other theories, or is this a common problem.

A bearing could have collapsed or a sheared shaft. Almera's are prone to this problem with the bearing and if left untreated it will cause complete gear box failure. Shaft busted out of the casing. Was there oil on the ground? Google results are coming up with failures of them avensis gearboxes...

    I know that.

I was just saying almera's fail from bearing issues, maybe this is similar circumstances to the avensis. Google search results coming up with failures of the avensis gearbox. was there oil on the ground?

Had the linkages go on one. Could be clutch too.

    Clutch won't cause that.

Bearing went on my old man's 03 1.8 litre a few months back too so it is a known issue on them. High mileage on it though, cost to replace outweighed the market value of the car.
