Looking for a new 2 litre diesel saloon. Reliability, comfort and depreciation are the three key issues. What would ye recommend?

    up to €35k

In that budget, the A4 is the best for depreciation. On your budget you aren't going to get one with much kit as standard, but it will probably depreciate less than anything else in it's class. Take a test drive to see if it's comfortable for you - my left foot catches the foot rest whenever I use the clutch and I couldn't put up with that. Also, the standard seats aren't that supportive if you have a bad back.

You should be able to get a 120ps 2.0Tdi A4, with the S-Line exterior pack (currently on special offer) within budget. Might have to sacrifice metallic to get it within the €35k, but they offer non-metallic black and it also looks well in white and red (both no cost), if that's your sort of thing.

New 3 series is coming out next year, but for €35k you'd only be looking at a 316d, and I can't recommend that - obviously!

If you want more bang for your buck, then the Volvo open weekend is on at the moment (think it's this weekend). You'd get a very well specced S60 for that amount of cash, but it will lose value a lot quicker than a similar priced A4.

Nice budget. With that kind of money would you not pick up and already depreciated motor?

    OP ^

    159?

Op is looking for something that dont go down in value like a led baloon. A4 would be my choice given the criteria. A red A4 s line would look very substansial.

my apologies i skip read the third one! although, a few months old 159 would have taken a big hit and would be well under budget

I bought a Mondeo recently and couldn't be happier. €35k would get you a nice spec one but depreciation would prob hurt you, more than an A4, but with a much higher spec

Is anyone going to mention the Superb? :) You'd get a nicely kitted one for under 30k. Whatever you buy is going to lose the guts of 50% in the first three years so its worth keeping that in mind. An A4 might lose less percentage-wise but when you look at the overall totals then you might actually lose as much if not more.

IMHO a 35k A4 isn't a lot of car and there'd be much better value in cars that are 6 months to a year old.

Given the budget and buying new I assume it's a company car and you have to be in tax band a/b.
The a4 makes the most sense on that front.
If its private wait a little while and buy a 2010/11 bmw 520d. - values seem to be holding strong.
Only other one is a slightly used a5 A5 sportback - has a more accessible boot and it is considered 'cool' which will help with desirability when you sell it on

This Jaguar XF looks very nice, someone else has already taken the hit on the initial depreciation too. I'd rather that than buy a brand new entry model A4 or similar just because it depreciates less.

Can the op live with a 2.7?

    I wouldn't have thought a Volvo S60 D3 would depreciate that badly,would it? I mean the XC90 hold it's value well afaik.

Actually I stand corrected there. The Volvo seems to be worth slightly more used. Sorry about that.

Yeah the tax is a killer at €1050 which would probably rule it out for the OP, didn't realise the 2.7 had such poor emmissions.

The 3.0 is better still on emissions. Would still be worth it for one

You could pick up one of these bad boys... Yes not brand new but nothing wrong with a year and a half old car like this compares to a overpriced new car.

    Me 2c anyway

saw a '09 XF this morning up close, silver with black leather interior. Have to say there is not a better looking car on the road in this class by a country mile

I think it looks awkward to be honest especially the front end, back of it is grand but those front lights are awful.

wouldnt say they're awful, and they have addressed them in the facelifted 2012 model.

Was going to edit the post to say that it would appear that they addressed the problem with the newer model, looks much better!

Can never understand why an OP ask's specifically for NEW car suggestions and you still get the old warriors suggesting Second hand models.

New means New in my books

i see many people here refer to new, but it turns to be new to them, ie secondhand

For 20k you can get a new Mitsubishi Lancer 1.8 150bhp turbo diesel.

    Ticks all boxes.

Its reliable, fairly comfortable, depreciation doesn't matter as its dirt cheap compared to the competition.

    http://www.carzone.ie/new-cars/mitsubishi/Lancer/saloon

Probably a better choice than the 35k Audi A4 120BHP 2.0 TDI that's been recommended and 35k Volvo s60 which will be worth a fraction more than the 20k Lancer in 4 years.

    Poverty spec :pac:

While the lancer has a great engine by all accounts the interior is cheap and the whole car feels tinny. Not a patch on the other cars mentioned. Plus I doubt anyone looking at spending 35k is going to go for a 24k ish mitsu.

You'll get it for a lot less than 24k though, point taken.

Besides the great engine it is ordinary, which is a pity.

I heard they are bringing out a 4wd 180bhp from that 1.8 diesel for the sport model next year, they might sort out a few things with that one.

Alfa 159 are nice but depreciation is a killer.

Pick up a six month old or 1 year old 159 for very little these days. Great car anyway whatever other people say. Estate is the one to have though
