Linking Humax to BBC iPlayer - possible?

I tried to link my Humax Foxsat to my router the other day to see if iPlayer would work.

All I got was "please try again later" type error messages. I am guessing I am not allowed to access it as I am in RoI v UK.

Is there an easy way to get it working?

It is possible if you know anything about proxy servers and such like, I certainly don't.
BBC is blocking you from i-Player because it sees a foreign IP address, that simple. I-Player is intended for UK addresses only, ie UK tv licence payers.

I was recently using a free UK VPN account which changed the password every 12 hours so you had to check the website before you connected to the UK VPN, then you could view the BBC iPlayer/ITV Player websites. But it seems to have gone now, there are a few listed in Google though - I must check them out. They will only work from your PC though.

I don' t know the Humax Foxsat but if it had a place for you to enter a proxy server like excollier has said then you might be able to find a premium proxy server that will allow you to use their UK servers.

I was running a Windows VPS (Virtual Private Server) and Wingate proxy server that allowed me to access the BBC iPlayer, but in the end I rarely used it and gave it up. It depends on how much you want to use it.

Thanks for the replies, but it sounds like too much hassle to get it sorted tbh.

I would probably use it rarely, so may as well forget about it.

I take it, it's got to do with this - a Wii can use a proxy server...

You can buy access to a proxy server here... unless you can find one that's free of course...

Out of interest, do those of you who want to use the iPlayer, do you need it on the TV or would you be happy enough to watch it on a computer / laptop?

The reason I ask is that I know how to rig it up on a computer, haven't tried it on my Humax freesat box, not sure if there's an option to do so but if there is and I figure it out then I'll let you know.

Edit: found an interesting thread on google regarding this, seems it can be done with the wii as others have said, but can also be done with a laptop or PC with a shared internet connection.

Nope, there's a couple of ways of doing it, you can do it through Firefox or you can install an additional browser & program to do it. (both options are free)

I think this vid was put together by a boardsie:

FreeUKVPN.com was the website I used to access the BBC iPlayer. But I can no longer view the site. But one of the problems with it was you could not view the HD content without it constantly loading every 4 or 5 seconds.

The VPN website I posted above gives you access to American servers so you can also use Hulu as well. I don't know what the quality of connection is like but there are loads of servers to try. It's not bad for €50 for the year, and you can try it for 30 days and get your money back.

I don't like that method of using Tor, Tor is really slow and not suitable for streaming video content.

Hmm I found browsing with Tor to be very slow, but once the video started streaming then it was perfect.

You could also install Foxy Proxy basic from the Firefox addons section, then get some proxy server settings from xroxy.com, that browses pretty well and will run Hulu also.
