So, thinking about the thread on what this forum is actually achieving, I have an idea. Could be rubbish but sure bear with me - and it just might improve the atmosphere, which I'm sure we'd all agree would be a good thing.

I think that we'd probably all agree that the way the forum is at present probably doesn't allow people to actually get to know each other in terms of what they believe, or for new visitors to learn anything - rather it kinda goes like this:

    1) person A makes a claim or expresses an opinion
    2) person B counters it
    3) person C jumps in to defend person A
    4) person D jumps in to defend person B
    5) person A/B, whatever makes assumptions about person A/B, whatever - that they are a 'nutter', 'extremist', 'bigot' etc...

With the result that people get the wrong idea (or maybe sometimes the right idea!) about other people, people don't feel welcome, people don't learn anything new etc etc...

So what I was going to suggest is that instead of people agreeing and disagreeing with each other on different topic, people getting infractions etc, what we could do is give each other a chance to express their thoughts/perceptions of different topics without getting into back and forth debate... Radical, no?!

So, in practice, we could take a verse, or a topic, and people could post what their understanding of it is - without anyone being able to counter it/attack it, etc. That would be the only rule on thread. That way, we get a better insight into people's perceptions as they aren't posting expecting to come under attack/being challenged.

    Could be worth trying!

Try Philologos' thread on Mark, it sounds like what you're after. We need more people to contribute to it.

Yep I was going to mention Philologos' thread - while great, I think the reason it might not be attracting many folks is because the verses are quite long but more that it is prescriptive, i.e. contains long lists of questions. This would be one or two related verses with short commentaries.

You don't have to answer all the questions. See my last post on that thread. I'm perfectly happy to have people sum up their ideas on the passage there. What I do think is important is to get the right depth to it.

Run that by me again? :)

So some one states an opinion and if you don't agree with it, you ask them to restate in another way, or what?

Different opinions are inevitable and it's the way it's handled that matters.

EDIT: btw, I think it would help a lot to stick to one question/topic at a time to keep things focused.

How about getting to know each other somehow? Beyond religious beliefs, I mean? :)
    Maybe a brief presentation thread?

It may be a silly idea, since getting to know one another it's exactly related to Christianity, but I figured if we knew each other a little bit better, perhaps we'd have more patience and respect? :)

I had actually been thinking of an 'in the well' type thread which works brilliantly on other parts of Boards, where purpose of the thread is that the person 'in the well' is asked various questions by other posters.

Great idea. Perhaps a sticky where regular posters could enter a brief bio (age, sex, religious leanings etc) after their usernames. I think we'd be less likely to eat each other up if we knew who's posting what.

This seems like a good idea to me,something along the lines of Brandy and Cigars in the Gentlemans Club perhaps?
