Getting Your Car Serviced

    Hey Folks,

I've been ringing around a few places getting quotes to have our '99 Micra serviced and they come in around €200. The missus is adamant that if there is little to no work to be done on the car that the garage doesn't charge or only charges a small amount.

Is this the case? I wouldn't have thought so but said I'll ask anyway.

firstly, if comparing quotes, you need to know what they are quoting for. Some will be quoting for an oil change with oil filter. Others will be quoting for oil, oil filter, air filter, Spark plugs and fuel filter together with all the required checks on brakes etc

Whatever they quote you will pretty much pay IMO and possibly some extras but I wouldnt pay 200 for a service on a micra to start with.

    Do it yourself

It's a business. They won't do it for free! You probably easily do it yourself though. :)

€200 is a bit rich even for a major service on a 99 Micra. The parts are very cheap for them and they don't take anything special in the way of oil so €150 should cover it really.

It is important to point out that there is more to a service than just changing oil, filters and plugs. There is a big difference between having a full inspection service done by a reputable garage and going through the motions yourself changing oil and spark plugs on your driveway.

    Please read this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055422868

And save yourself a lot of money.

Seriously, if it's just filters and oil, even if the plugs need changing, you will save 100euro+ easily with a few hours of your time.

Fair enough I could probably do the essentials myself but really it's a 12 year old car and I'd like to have someone give it the once over to make sure there's nothing seriously wrong with it.

I really just want someone to have a look over it and make sure it's not a danger to herself or anyone else.

In all seriousness though, definitely give him a pm. Very sound bloke, and he'll not steer you wrong.

Well I've just PM'd the Doctor on your advice. I'm afraid I'm not fully clued in with his standing in these parts. I hope I didn't send him a nuisance pm!

depends what you want in a 'service'

you can change liquids, filters easily yourself if you read up on it.

on the other hand work on brakes or the like would be beyond the means of most people unless you have the know how.

a 99 micra is a basic motor to work on and is only worth sub 1000eu so dont go mad on a service.
