SCRAPING/RUBBING SOUND, MINI 1000

Hi lads was wondering if ye could help me out, i have a 1976 mini 1000, i have this scraping/rubbing sound in the front end of the car, it's hard to describe the sound but it's like a dry scraping sound and it's high enough pitch, the thing is the sound only starts after about 30 minutes of driving, it's never there at the start, or if i start the car and leave it running for 30 minutes it still needs to be driven for the sound to come through, i have put new pads on and this hasn't sorted it, when the sound is there it's loudest when you let up off the accelerator, and it's there whether the car is in gear or neutral and the noise doesn't change under braking, i can't hear it at speeds over 30 mph but thats probably due to the sound being drowned out due to engine/exhaust noise, any ideas as to what it could be??

    cheers,

    goss

Is the noise there when the car is sitting still and idling?

    A wheel bearing?

definitely not fan belt, the noise is like metal on metal, as for a wheel bearing, if the bearing was gone the noise would be there all the time, this only starts after about 30 minutes driving

Cold (thick) grease would insulate the noise.
When the grease heats up when the car is moving it becomes thinner causing more metal to metal contact and more noise.
I would say a bearing or universal joint.

well jacked up the car there the othe night and it seems like the bearing is gone on the front passenger side alright, alot of play in the wheel, have ordered a new set off ebay, might as well do both sides while i'm at it, so hopefully this will cure the problem.
