Presidential Inauguration is streamed on an Ireland only basis

Why is the Presidential Inauguration being streamed on an Ireland only basis?

Surely this is an event that ex-pats should be able to see?

Adds: Available in a window on RTE News Now. Still don't understand why the main uncluttered stream of the event is Ireland only.

There are a variety of home produced RTE output that is not available internationally.
For instance I wanted to refer the recent Royal Canal programme to some prospective tourists, but it didn't work abroad.

    Is this because of
    - some definite policy
    or
    - laziness in showing discretion as to what to show so don't show anything

    I'll go for cost.

The cost is the exact same. In fact it would be cheaper if they didn't have to employ geo-locking.

Usually the reasons a programme is available only on an either ROI or Island of Ireland basis is rights issues (RTÉ have not purchased the rights to show the programme outside the relevant territory). However I've no idea why the presidential inaugaration should have been geolocked, its a public event which would have no rights issues attached.

I would guess it was a mistake as the 2 hour inauguration programme is now available on RTE Player International.

What struck me was, how close the inaguration was to the 11 O'Clock Armistice, watching the RTE news later in the day reminded me that most of Europe & the World was observing the Armistice at 11am, admittedly events at Dublin Castle were one hour later, but it was close.

I wonder why they choose Remembrance day to inaugurate our President?

President McAleese's term ended on the 10th, the two previous inaugurations (1997 & 2004) were also held on the 11th Nov.

Which still begs the question "Why have the inauguration on the 11th Day of the 11th Month" < surely this has an impact on overseas viewing?

This is not true for all programming blocked to non Irish viewers. My reply was to a post which did not mention the presidential inauguration.

The first 11th of Nov inaguration was decided by the 1997 government when President Robinson stepped down early that year to take up a position with the UN. The date was exactly 60 days after she stepped down, not sure if this was significant but I wouldn't think overseas viewing was a consideration at the time as RTÉ wasn't on Sky and there was no RTÉ player also wouldn't expect it to be carried on any overseas channels, maybe an item on the news.
