Help to house train JRT

My partner is minding her daughters year old JRT until Christmas. Gets on fine with my 4 yr old setter. Partner works 3 nights a week and I am tired of finding a puddle and pile every morning. I can let my setter out at night, she does it and waits at back door. Cant let Jack out on his own, as garden is not secured and he wanders off. Last time gone for 4 1/2 hours. Yes, he is a male. Has absoulutely NO RECALL. Will not do anything on the lead, have tried numerous times.

Any suggestions?

But he goes for your partner on walks? How long is he walked for? Sorry, just trying to figure this out. Where does he go to the toilet during the day and in the morning?

Thanks Toulouse for your replies and concern. Bear in mind there seems to be no typical day in our lives at the moment! Example. Starting at 4 pm, herself goes to work, will not be home until noon the next day. Both dogs have been well walked and exercised depending on the weather. We head from the house for the midday walk, with the JRT on lead, my setter heals off lead. Get to the sea, both dogs off lead for a run. Both do their business, which I may add, we collect.
Back to house, my partner off to work at 4-5. Dogs fed round 6-7. Come 11, ready for me bed, I can let my setter out for her business, but do take the JRT out on lead, cant fecking trust him to go wandering. He does feck all, and in am, there is the mess!

Come morning, JRT in no hurry to go out, obviously, and then the cycle starts again.

If during the day, when my partner is not working, if she stands outside the back garden, and watches the JRT like a hawk, he will do his business, but only for her.

I might add, the JRT seems to have been taken from the litter at 4 weeks or so which may be contributing to this behaviour and his OCD type behaviour at times. And herself and the daughter have not a clue about proper behaviour of a dog, but that is another story, but does probably contribute to the current problem.

I know it's far from ideal, but have you tried taking him out during the night? What routine is he on in his own house? Is he paper trained or anything?

Well depending on certain internal features unique to each dog, most will digest their food inside 5-6 hours, less for smaller dogs obv. raw and packed food will vary the time also. keep an eye on roughly the time it takes from mouth to tail.

Have an area set as the "potty area" 5x5 feet is fine, after your pup / dog eats watch it for signs of "fidgeting" and sniffing the floor, once it's clear the dog is ready to relieve itself take it too it's area and wait for the magic to happen.

rinse and repeat until the dog doesn't need an escort any more.

Edit: Klyith is right, young pups won't have the strength in their muscles to hold water or poop all night, be prepare to get up around 3-4am and let her use the toilet, just like a toddler it will take time to build up.

Did take him out for the first two months, round and round the garden, down the road, looking for any fence post in sight and.......not a sausage. And I am talking a good 15-20 minutes

Not sure what you mean about this potty area? Inside or Out? This dog is nearly 2, and in his previous home so so to speak, was let out on his own whenever he wanted and to return when he wanted to. I cannot and will not do that! As it is, 3 times I let him out with my dog, watched him like a hawk and off he scampered and returned the next afternoon.

Would you be able to crate the dog at night - maybe borrow one if possible. I would think if the dog is two it should be able to hold it for a night - in a crate it wont want to soil it since it will have to lie in it until the next morning. If you dont have a crate - maybe corner off a small area just big enough for its bedding - is the dog toilet trained during the day - is it just a night problem?

Crate is an option I have thought about, but did try for a week putting him in the utility room, 8ft long by 2 1/2 feet. Fine all night, bring him into sitting room/kitchen, as soon as my back is turned, a wee on my dogs vet bedding or floor and or a poo. Its amazing how long this fella can hold on for. And now more good news, with me/us for another few months!!!!!!
