An odd idea

Why don't car manufacturers pay off toll road operators?

Say for argument's sake, BMW paying NTR a fee per new car sold, to allow all '12 and onward BMW's pass through NTR tollbooths without any charge, then using this as advertisement selling the car. The cost of implimenting such an offer would surely be much less than the value in having sold the car.

Considering that a good number of cars supposedly covered by the offer, would never actually use a tolled road, or may do so in a month of Sundays. Therefore, paying for the ones who regularly do.

Don't forget that you live in a nation of begrudgers.

The first thing that would happen is that people in the west of Ireland buying the hypothetical BMWs would be complaining that they were subsidising the folks in the east (M50, M1 and M4) and south (Fermoy) driving for free through the toll booths so they would be looking for an extra discount from the dealers and the whole scheme would colllapse.

I don't think that'd be a case of begrudgery rather a case of fairness. you could begrudge them all you wanted for having a '12 bmw tho :p

Besides from the "a lot of people in Ireland only go through a toll a couple of times a year, or never". BMW know they will sell X amount of cars next year regardless of a promotion like this, so they will basically lose money on those X amount of deals (would have bought anyway) and i cant see there being a big enough jump in sales to benefit BMW.

The same begrudging crowd saying the emissions based tax favours the rich would be all over this idea saying the same, that it only suits 'rich' people who can afford new cars...

I don't over use the motorway network but I spend €40 per month on tolls. Someone using the M3 on a daily basis could run up bills well over €100 per month. Funding this would cost over €1200 per year, the cost of servicing a €10,000 loan.

You are, therefore, saying the car manufacturer would be effectively offering a discount of €10,000 ( and much more for many users).

    A non-runner of an idea.

    I like it.

I don't use tolls really though tbh and if I do claim it back.

Plus, then could have a lot of fleet vehicles passing through tolls all day long merrily racking up serious bills.

Can't see it working though. With the likes of the NRA currently subbing the M3 tolls, could they justify free vehicles passing through daily ?
