Is this a realistic commute?

I just might get my hands on one of them job things- the issue is that I have a child who needs to be dropped off to creche in Dundalk at 8am (opening time). But this job is in Finglas and will probably start at 9am. I could be on the motorway by 8.05am.

Is this completely unrealistic? (will be driving a car as helicopter licence is lost).

Its unrealistic until the M1 widening to Lissenhall is finished (seeing as its not started yet...) and even then it'll be pushing it.

It's possible, but you'll be burnt out by the end of the year.

Also, it's rather expensive given the price of petrol at the moment.

aggh one says this and one says that !!

Was thinking of checking out a few back roads to see if it would be faster.
Solair-2 years of sitting on my backside is wearing thin too....

Things would have to run perfectly every morning for it to work. Why not use a creche in Finglas/Glasnevin/Santry?

I really don't want to swap creches as the wee man has been through a lot and it had taken a lot to settle him as it is-also the creche is beside his future school.

Fair enough. You'll be cutting it very fine, as I said, and you will end up being slightly late probably once or twice a week. Maybe try negotiating for a small bit of flexitime, even an extra 15 min, but with a new job you're on thin ice... :(

Oh, and I don't think you'll get a back road faster than M1/M50, just so you know.

Better start looking for the helicopter licence so! Getting back is less pressure as I could call in one or two favours to collect him. Will speak nicely to both creche and hopefully manager.

It could be done, but you'd be spending a lot of money on fuel.

The creche doesn't start earlier no? Even 7.45?? 8am is an awful time to be starting a commute! :(

    EDIT: Sorry misread OP. Apologies!

Just a little off toipic but I was just wondering how long would it take to travel from the the Dundalk exit on the M1 as far as the Donabate/Skerries exit at peak time in the morning and from the the M50 exit onto the M1 back to the Donabate exit at peak time in the evening

Do you have any friends that use the same creche that you could drop your little person to that little bit earlier who could drop both kids to the creche @ 8? I know it'd be a big ask.

Or maybe a grandparent would do it for you. Again it'd be a big ask, somebody having to get out of the scratcher at 7.30 to take in your little person.

Hey Axel! Quickest way to Finglas from Dundalk is to take the M1 as far as the Collon/Dunleer exit.
Head towards Collon and then meet up with the N2. Continue through Collon and Slane and join up with the M2 just outside Ashbourne, this will take you all the way into Finglas.
This route is suprisingly quick and and you also avoid the M1 bottleneck (Airport/M50) junctions which can be very congested on weekday mornings.
It usually takes me about 55 mins from Dundalk on this route. Oh and you also avoid the M1 toll too! :-)

To add to dm09's post, if you didn't mind paying the toll you could come off at the Drogheda/Duleek exit and head towards the N2/M2 that way and avoid Slane. It's about a 30 min journey from that point to Finglas most mornings barring any major traffic incidents.

My vote would be to put the baby in a creche closer to dublin... I know you dont want to unsettle the baby but its better for baby and yourself that you have a job and your not gonna be late for work!!!

Drogheda or malahide would be good to have the baby in creche.. much closer and realistic!!

Agreed, find a creche en route, you can leave earlier and drop her off and make sure you're in work on time.

With your route there might not be another creche that wouldn't take you too far off the beat and track but you might just need to research.

I think its better to leave a little earlier than to be stressing and rushing every morning.

thanks so much for the advice. Will def be doing a few dry runs on the back roads! I could pull in a few favours as a one off but need a longterm solution. There's a small chance that the job has a flexi option! If that's the case then I'm on the pigs back :) (now fingers crossed that I get the job)

BTW, to everyone who advised that I should look into changing mini roses' creche- On paper it is absolutely the most logical step. (big pause-deep breath) However he has honestly been through more than any child his age should go through and it can take him a very long time to settle into a new situation as a result. In addition to this his creche is literally across the road from the school he will be starting soon enough.
