    Hey:),

I have been having trouble with the ignition on my car and turns out I have to get a new battery. Its a 01 Renault Clio 1.2, anyone know how much it will cost on average?

Depends where you get it and what brand, but generally I would expect it to cost roughly between 45-60 euro.

How much would you pay for a second hand one? Would there be much in the difference??

Dunno what you'd pay for a second hand battery, but why you bother putting a second hand battery into a car? You'd be far better off getting a new one and being done with it. It's far better than putting a potentially weak battery in, especially this time of year, and not being able to start the car in the morning or an evening after work or a night out or whatever.

A false economy. It could you about €20 to €30 for a used one and still fail on you too next week. Buy a new one and it will most likely last you a few years.

Second hands batteries used to go for 20 quid. Most of them now are being swallowed up by people collecting/stripping/selling the insides.

Buy, you should get one with a 2 year warranty for about 40-50 euro. If you plan on keeping the car long term, I'd advise buying a Bosch one.

Much agreed. I was left stranded with a flat battery I had bought from a breakers yard and said never again....you learn by your mistakes. You might be lucky and get a good one but overall your playing Russian roulette with car batteries. I'd just bite the bullet and go for a new car battery in future and I'm the sort of person who would do anything to save a few quid.

I have a Halfords battery in my car at the moment and am impressed with it. I left the interior light on in the car overnight, not too long back and the car still fired up the following morning

"johndaman, you would get a great battery from Halfords.they are Varta made expensive but they perform great.from a breakers yard will always be an issue.i test these batteries.maybe 15% are good and will recharge and perform properly.most are cyled to much and sulphated.however a reconditioned batter properly tested will last for years

I do believe Varta batteries are very highly regarded so that gives me a wee bit of extra peace of mind Paudie23, as Ive had my fair share of battery trouble down through the years.

As you say getting a battery from a breakers yard will always be a gamble. More often than not they will just whack a suitably sized battery of a car that just came in or worse still a car sitting there for a while, without testing it so its going to be hit and miss.

If a used battery is tested in the proper manner to ensure its holding its amps or whatnot I'm sure it would be good to you.

you should not have any issue with Varta.they have 3 different grades of battery so the heavier you pay the better it is, lead content on plates etc.only way to be certain an old battery is good is to charge it and let it sit 4 a wk.test each cell with a hydrometer, then a midtronics then a heavy load.if it passs all 3 happy days. cheap fix.
