6 penalty points

    Hello all

I am getting the last 2 of my six penalty points. Now please don't say anything about getting them etc - 2 were speed traps and I said that to the guards. I was also told by a guard that they can't be hidden (which they were for 2) but while I appeal my 28 days will be up AND if it goes to court the judge will say speeding is speeding. Totally unfair and he agreed, I was in total control of the car, going at an ok speed for the area and only 1 sign for the speed was up in the area.

He did suggest I inform the local station to the area etc

Anyway I am checking about insurance and it will double for current company and others will cancel the policy.

This happen anyone before? can you give a name of a company I can check out?

    Thanks

Just explain to your current insurer about the points and see what they say. If they cancel the policy all you can do is crack open the phonebook and ring around. If you have a gripe about the location of where you were caught, make a report to the Garda ombudsman.

I didn't know they could cancel your insurance for six points.
    Is this true?

I guess it would depend if it was in the terms a conditions that you agreed to when you took out your policy.

I had eight points at one stage. Insurance was loaded by about €150, that was it.

Back down to 4 now and lesson learned.

can you pm me the company please? I am really worried. Its pay the fine or get heating oil at the moment so if insurance goes up it will be a cold xmas (totally serious)

    Thanks all

I did ask the insurance company what if and they said mine would go up a min of €300 for the 6 points, as it is its going up €70-€80 with the two i have just received :(

1 insurance company did confirm they would cancel a policy - you see it advertised a lot on tv

I will report to the ombudsman - thanks, didn't think of that!

Like if we were all followed for one day everyone would get points - we are not all angels on the road. I was just unlucky :(

The important thing is to learn your lesson and stop getting points in the first place.

Watching this thread quite un sympatyeticly but why would you report them to the ombudsman? Policies are riddled with stuff like "we reserve the right to cancel your policy without reason giving you 7 days written notice........" Sorry but deal with your actions like the rest of us.

He's right. You were speeding, you got caught and now you have to deal with the consequences. It's not bad luck, it's life.

With regards to your policy, read your t&c and see what they say. Also give their customer care a call and see what they say.

I was actually going to apologise for my comment, I did ask for people not to go on about it and be "smart". I am taking the points and I know I was speeding. Now have any of you ever gone over the limit in town? If not then I bow to you but I doubt it. I as asking for advice on insurance because like many other people out there its difficult and I had to pay the fine and save money aside for the insurance and leave my tank without oil, pretty cold this time of year. I wasn't looking for sympathy or smart replies just advice if I can get an insurance company that won't double my insurance so I can heat my house this winter.

And for all you smart people out there I was actually told by the guard to highlight the hidden van to the local station.

Hope you are all very proud of yourselves that you tried to make someone feel worse - I am happy to take my points but not happy to sit in a cold house.

Penalty points are not just an on-the-road-if-less-than-12 off-the-road-if-more-than-12metric. They are also one of the most reliable ways of measuring risk. The more you have the more likely you are to have an accident that will cost the insurance company money (and that's all they care about not little things like lives or injuries). It doesn't matter if the Guards were hidden or not. They caught you speeding 3 times and for the Insurance companies statistically that means you are an increased risk. That increased risk combines with other statistically proven risk factors such as age, type of car, length of licence, past claims, chance of theft (alarm, parking etc) etc etc to give the insurance companies a fairly good predictor of the chances that they will be paying out on your policy.

You need to shop around but you also need to accept that you will be paying a lot more than someone with 0 or even 2 points.

To be fair you're asking for no smart answers yet playing the sympathy card in relation to paying the fine.

Yes, I have sped through towns. I also don't have any points

    Anyway, on topic.

An Insurance company CAN cancel your policy if they so wish and DONT have to give you a reason as to why they did the same.

You are obliged to disclose any material facts to your Insurer and that includes mid term so when you get your points, give them a shout.

I'd be very suprised with any insurer cancelling somebodies policy merely due to a six point disclosure. I wouldn't do it with my lot myself.

If you do get cancelled then take it on the chin and ring about. A Google search will give you the names of some brokers who deal with people finding it hard to get Insurance

Nobody here can tell you how much your premium will go up by as there are far too many variables to consider in relation to the same.

As far as reporting hidden speed traps to the Garda Ombudsman goes, It's very much your word against theirs. Also, a lot of Gardai I know that do that job, do their very best to make the vans as prominent as they can. Then again, there's always a few who get off on not doing so.

Anyway, contest this and like you said, a judge will throw the book at you (and double your points)

I trust this is of some help to you.

People are trying to help you here. If you don't learn to take responsibility for your own driving now then you'll keep accumulating points and one day you'll wake up to a ban. Do you want to fix this or don't you?

Re the insurance, get on the phone and ring every insurer and a good selection of brokers. This is the only way to get the best quote, there are no short cuts.

I might be missing the obvious here but why do you even bother reporting your penalty points to your insurance company???

Because only an idiot would pay for insurance and then give the ins co an excuse not to pay out.

Of course I am feeling sorry for myself but not looking for sympathy. I blabbed a bit (as I do) but my question was at the bottom. I asked the question to see if anyone else had points that could give me names of companies and it would save me time and money ringing around. The company I am with will insure me but double it so been proactive and looking to see if I can get a more reasonable quote. Just to note I was going 7kmh over the limit, yes it over the limit I know and I wasn’t aware of the limit on the road at the time as it was a road I didn’t travel before so going 57 in 50 (I thought it was 60), I am a very careful driver with one accident in 15+ years and that was when I was a learner on a slippy road.

All I asked for was advice if anyone else had 6 points and if the insurance company didn’t come down too hard on them. I know I was speeding – I don’t need to be told like a child etc. Anyway I got a pm with a name so I will try there.

Thanks for your help (all who gave)

I may go over the speed a limit (a bit) and get caught and take it and I will report to my insurance company. If I am paying for insurance I want to be covered

Clearly you do, seeing as this is your third time being caught and punished.

Yes daddy (deleted) did you ever go over the limit? Or do you even drive?

1st time the car was caught so I don't know who was driving
2nd and 3rd time I was few km over the limit, 1 I knew the speed and risked it the other I didn't.

So unless you have never done anything illegal (slightly speeding, no seatbelt, overtaking on white line) get off your high horse

Why oh why are there people like you in the world? I asked for advice. This is why I hate boards and some people in the world. God miserable people who treat others like ****e. If anyone else posts lets hope it is someone who had never done anything wrong

    No I haven't, and if I was caught, I'm sure I wouldn't again.

And BTW, speedometers are a little bit off so you were clearly going more than a "few km over the limit".

Incorrect. My car speedo is bang on the money. Some cars are off, some cars are not.

You're completely missing the point. Your six points can't be helped but, unless you change the behaviours that got you them, you're going to get more. This isn't about making you feel bad, and it's not about right and wrong either. It's about saving you money.

A couple of points here OP before you start taking this personally:

    1. Speeding is the devil, the root of all evil and the reason jesus hates us.

    2. Boards motors members are the epitome of perfection in motoring terms, to discard their invaluable advice would be tantamount to suicide on the road. Im surprised the RSA hasnt collaporated with this forum before now.

I think I agree! Anyway signing off - got more than advice, like even people here disagree with what 2 guards told me, so they must be perfect :) I think the two guards in the traffic bureau need to change jobs with a few in here!

Ps didn't take it personally - boards is known for members to attack and go off the topic rather than answer what the op is asking. Thanks to the member who gave me insurance details - you know who you are :) I appreciate it

Hann.s. you said with your first 2 points it was the car caught not you, you do not have to take those points!! i was in the same situation i let some1 else drive my car(btw they were insured on my policy) and i had to sign a declaration saying it wasnt me that was driving the car and declare the driver.

The other person had to pay the fine but as she is now living in america it didnt bother her. It didnt go to court or anything, that was 2 years ago.
