Big car to cart everyone around in...

    Hello,
I am looking to buy a big cat to get kids, dogs, buggies, sports gear etc around from A to B. Also for going off on a weekend away and taking kayaks with us on the roof. Also want something a bit more winter prrof, my rear wheel drive slid all over the road last winter.

Now, I know this car gets bad reviews, but I have been looking at a Hyundai Trajet. It ticks the boxes re my budget (low), the space (big) and, call me weird, but I actually thinks it looks OK. I 'hate' the Ford Galaxy and some of those others, and I know to some the trajet is equally as boxy, but I like it's shape more.

Other advantages, the one I am looking at is automatic (must have for me, have driven auto for years), mileage is low enough for an 04 (70K),

So....tell me why I would be mad to buy?

Other possible buy is a volvo or merc estate, don't like estates much as they remind me of hearses and if I have to have a people mover I want it to be high off the ground...Easier to strap babies into seats etc.

many thanks in advance for any comments.

A mate had one (petrol version) and when things started to go wrong it became a money pit. Nearly broke him.
The boot space in mpv's arent good with all the seats up. I had an Alhambra and went forever and with seats down it created a massive boot area.

Corolla Verso is quite a nice car, though not sure about the winter requirements. We picked one up recently

In the end it was a toss-up between that and this (Citroen C8):

How much space do you need? I was thinking of a Subaru Outback?

Thanks everyone for replies so far, am checking out all suggested models.

I only have 3 kids myself, but would like the facility to take one or other of my parents on various trips with us (my Dad's driving days are sadly over)

A Ford Galaxy, VW Sharan or Seat Alhambra might fit the bill, they are all the same car really, a proper 7 seater and still has a decent boot for the buggies and stuff.

Somehow I get the impresssion that if the OP is looking at 6 year old Hyundai Trajets then their budget is not enough to consider the likes of a Grand Picasso.

The auto boxes are very hard on fuel

Galaxy or sharan are better options and come with the 1.9 tdi which is a lot more reliable than the 2.0 crdi in the hyundai

    Chryser Voyager

It's petrol though and I'd insist on a fresh NCT

    Wasn't that the earlier model?

I'd take my chances with one

Edit: Yep they don't offer much driver safety.

    Still though I'd consider one

The Voyager's Euro NCAP rating is very poor though.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD - leather, 4x4, heated seats, auto, climate control etc. you can get a good 04 one for 5/6k

Avoid the earlier 3.1's they are pants apparently.

The problem is Op has a limited budget and wants lots of space

estates are all well and good but the rear most seats are very small and space is tight.

OP has stated they don't want a Galaxy and most likely any variant of it.

The OP is rather limited therefore in what they can have.

What about a Kia Sedona or Carens?

    How about a Honda Stream?

Cheap, reliable, low tax on 1.7, comfortable leather seats. Nicer than a Hyundai Tragedy.. :D
