New Tyres

    Hey guys.

I need 4 new tyres for my 18" wheels.

Do these look good enough? They're the cheapest on eiretyres, because they're on a special offer. I just want to check with those in the know that they're ok before I just buy the cheapest ones.

I'm a little afraid the local garage man will push to sell me his own expensive tyres regardless.

    Cheers.

It would be nice to actually see the tires.

Make sure they match your car's tire numbers.

Woops, sorry. I forgot to paste the link.

The tyres are 225 40/18 and I have them on my 04 Passat.

The tyres I was talking about are the first result that comes up with these details on eiretyres.ie's homepage. They're about €75 each.

Sorry I cant paste the link now, I'm just using my phone now.

    Thanks guys.

I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. They are also XL, which I doubt is a spec for your car. I would never advise skimping on tyres. The decent tyres start at around €135 on that website.

A colleague of mine fitted a set of cheap tyres to her car on Monday.

2 hours later the car was written off after it slid off the road going around a bend. No speeding involved etc. the road was wet at the time and in her own words the car just felt like it had no grip.

Her tyre of choice was triangle.

    steer clear of cheap tyres.

The most annoying thing for her was she had just purchased the car a few days earlier. That and she almost hit another car before she left the road

You could get nankang in that size fitted in a retailers for about 85 euro, so not worth the hassle of those and I'd put on nankang before those. However, I'd recommend spending the money on premium tyres such as Good Year, or if your on a budget Kumho are a good option.

The only place I'd put nankang before those is when putting both of them into a fire.

You're looking at €140+ per tyre for decent 18"s tbh. Thankfully my car came with 5 new 18" tyres fitted, but I think they're ~€200 each

I have that exact size on the front of my car. I ordered a pair of these yesterday in 225/40/r18 and got a pair in 255/35/r18 for the rear too.

€540 including delivery for all 4 and it's costing me €60 to get them fitted and balanced. They are being delivered tomorrow. In most cases camskill nearly always beat eiretyres on price and delivery time. The cheapest I could buy them locally was €700.

They get great reviews here:- http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Vredestein/Ultrac-Sessanta.htm

I imagine that a tyre in this size costing only €75 is complete rubbish and possibly dangerous.

The Hankook Ventus V12 Evo's s are highly rated, and can be got in your size for 135 a corner from Eire tyres (list price 223). Almost any independent can get them for around 135 fitted too (except maybe Advance). I had them on an Octavia vRs, got 25k miles+ out of them and no complaints.

The V12 Evo is €120 incl delivery from camskill. A good tyre but the Ultrac Sessanta gets a better review though.

You will get decent tyres for €100 after delivery and fitting.

Just get some Falkens on camskill. That size is the exact same as I have on the front of my car and I run Falken FK452 on mine.

I have used both before. Second link are the ones I have one the rear in 255/35/18.

OP another alternative is getting some premium part worn tyres for about €60 in that size with about 6mm on them.

I wonder was she thinking ' I have brand new tyres on so the grip is going to be great ' ?

Any new tyre takes about 100-160kms to scrub in and perform properly. The tyre supplier should have told her that.

I would have been crawling along, especially in the wet. If she had done a couple of hundred on those tyres and then slid off, I'd say sh!te make.
