If you've been awarded a full maintenance grant, you won't (or shouldn't) be liable for any tuition fees - which are covered by the government unless you've had previous third level education. The grant will also pay for your registration fee, but that's separate to the actual amount of money you're awarded - it goes directly to the college.

thank you for asnwering my question, i was just wondering because my friend said today if you are awarded 6100, 3000 goes to fees and 3100 for you, and that there was no way i could receive 6100 (I do because i live too far from college)

Is it the top-up rate? I know it's definitely possible to receive pretty much double the standard maintenance grant rate with the top-up.

i dont know, i just know the award is 6100 which is the maximum pay for people who live far from the college

Your friend is wrong - there is a grant that gives you 6100 plus the tuition fees as well - you don't have to pay them yourself

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

after a long battle with the grants authority over proof of address I have been approved of it. i am entitled to free fees and basically 100% of everything else including the cost of a field trip if necessary. I am on the special rate of maintenance grant.
I have been told I can collet my cheque from the college but unfortunately won't be able to until monday.
I am just wondering how much would the first installment of the grant be as I am months behind in rent an I am wondering how much if any I will have left for other billls?
    thank you

I think most places do the grants in three installments, so if that's the case, it'll be about a third of the total special rate amount. :) I think some of the VECs do it in monthly installments, but hopefully it'll be the former.

I think but I could be wrong that if you're in a university it's 3 instalments and ITs are sometimes 9 instalments

I am having the same problem with the grants people at the moment, proof of residency, how did you get it sorted in the end? Appreciate any advice, I even went and got an affidavit but that was no good...

I'm also having a problem not being able to prove residency. (No utility bills in my name & they wouldn't accept my lease.) I got letter saying closing date is 24th of this month, so it looks like I've no chance of getting it now. I'm studying in england by myself, and working part time, but still have problem paying rent so really could have used it. But I'm worried I won't have proof of residence for 2012/2013 grant either since I've only moved to new address in September 2011 and don't have any utility bills before Oct 16th. All I have is my lease again, and they might not accept it for whatever reason although it is a more legit one this time with registered landlord. Also I no longer have any of my original docs (since I sent them all to CDVEC)! Will the cdvec accept a utility bill from a previous address for 2012/13 as proof of residency if I'm living in England now?
