Using 3G on Ipad 2.0

I have a 32GB 3G & Wifi Ipad 2.0 but haven't really looked into using the 3G functionality at the minute.
I guess i'm scared it'll cost me a bomb if i enable it, but one of the lads in work recommended getting a Microsim off 3 and just using it as a Pay As you Go option.
Anyone on here use the 3G option on the Ipad in a different cost controlled fashion ???
Be interesting to hear peoples thoughts.

or if you have an iphone or android phone on a 3G contract you could could tether that to your ipad (its the personal hotspot option on iphone 4)

You'd have no real control on the costs though, would you Fred 252 ?

well i have an "all you can eat" data contract from 3 so it has no bearing on my costs. it does reduce the battery life of my iphone greatly though.

My understanding is that using ur ph as a tethering device is a separate entity and you need to activate a certain APN in order to do this.
If you got a micro-sim off 3 and say topped it up by €20 at a time, then you have control your costs.
    Does this make sense ?

Getting a second sim on your account would be easier than tethering, that's the way I have it. No messing with having to go into settings. Not sure how you would monitor usage if you have limited data, does your provider have any apps for tracking data usage?

I am with 3 will they issue a 2nd sim and if so is it just a case of asking in the shop. don't fancy ringing their customer care in India to find out, the answer may not be on their prepared script

Just ask 3 for a prepay micro sim for ip4 it will cost you €20. I'm am using it now with the iPad. From time to time I get a message saying that there is no data left on my plan toggle airplane mode on/ off that will clear it works like a charm and no contract.:D
