Are they strict on this or would you get away with a couple kg's over?

Having just flown with them to Heathrow and then back from Manchester I would say no. Some people's bags/suit cases were so big they really struggled getting them into the overhead storage.

I have had my hand luggage checked for both weight and size. I can recall British Airways(not in Ireland)doing it, cant remeber other airline that did it,it was in Shannon.

I had around 13kg in my hand luggage last time and she weighed and it exclaimed I was over weight; I told her I have valuable cameras and a netbook in there so I can't check it in, she left me go on with it and I was relieved.

Going & coming from london gatwick last week and the aer lingus gate check in was very strict, they stoped quite a few bags.Going by the above posts it must depend on the staff who are on duty that day.

That happened to me at Heathrow as I had flown in from Bangkok with Etihad via Abu Dhabi and I explained that it was fine for the Etihad flight (Which it wasn't and they gave me a similar grilling which I bluffed them on). I have been given the run over with several airlines in the past and I always got out of it by producing my camera and netbook. Never on Ryanair though, I wouldn't push my luck that far!

It really depends on the ground staff at whatever airport you're travelling to. If you're checking in at the airport they may well weigh it then, but if you've checked in online then at the gate they're probably going to be more concerned about the size of the bag than the weight. But again, they could be more strict at some airports.

Aer Lingus staff tend not to check the bags at the gate but if you are at a gate(Aer Lingus) that is manned by another company they are checking the bags.

on the good side, dont bother checking in any bags bring them to the gate they will get taken off you and put in cargo and hey presto you have not paid for overweight baggage.

In my experience they are fine when you are flying out of Irish airport as it is normally Aer Lingus Staff who are at the gate.

I find on the return leg they are much more strict. Flew out of both Amsterdam and Edinburgh ( Aer Lingus Regional so smaller allowance) and found them very very strict, even at check in the weighed you bags.

Depends on the staff. Just pack 10kg just to be safe.
