I currently have an old Eircom Netopia 2247 NGW router and am looking to upgrade it.

Do you have any recommendations? Are there any factors you should take into account when replacing a router?

Have a look at the TP Link brand I have bought some of them for Friends/relatives and have never had an issue with them compared to some bigger brand names.

Its also a bonus that they are relatively cheap on amazon also :)

I would reccomend also to add Netgear and Linksys, avoid Belkin by a mile! I've heard good things about TP Link but if you want to get one locally Argos do Linksys and Netgears, Buffalo ones are meant to be decent aswell (no expierience with them)

Netopia 2247 NGW is a modem/router, it has a built in ADSL2+ modem as well as router.

So that is something you need to consider when buying a replacement.

I'm still using the eircom modem/router but only as a modem (router/access point functions turned off). I have it connected to an old linksys router running on DD-WRT (free open source firmware) and it performs 1000 times better than eircom router on it's own. Anyway almost any router should be better than eircom crap (whether it's Netopia or Zyxel).

If you will need a help with setting up your Netopia device in MODEM ONLY mode let me know and I will write a quick guide.
