Short Term Insurance

I'm going to Scotland for a few days (going over Sunday and coming back Tuesday).

It looks like I'm going to have to drive someone else's car for the duration of the time.

The car is a 3.0D XF.

I've tried using the few online temporary online insurers but I can't seem to get a quote for the car because of the engine size and my age (under 25).

Do any of you have any suggestions?

I really need the insurance to be able to drive it.

I could do a temporary change of car on my own insurance while I'm over there but then I'm leaving my car uninsured against theft while I'm gone...

Can the owner not name you onto their policy of insurance ?

@ OP put your car in a safe location and transfer insurance.

That's what I'm leaning towards but I'm not overly happy with having to do it.

You will need to make your existing insurer aware that the vehicle you are transferring onto is not in Ireland which may cause you some hassle.

Why cant you go down the route of being named on the car short term?

    Is it uninsured or something?

No it's insured but on an English policy and they won't insure me on the bloody thing.

The policy I have has 30 days cover in any EU country.

Don't you have a third party extension, which allows you to drive other cars (which you don't own)?

For your car,it may not cover temporary transfers onto someone elses car thats not based in ROI.Aside from that, you also have the potential stumbling block of dual insurance.

Best bet is check with your insurer and see what they say to be honest.

Yea but I'm not over 25 so the extension is worthless to me!!!

Well it's not so much dual insurance as I'm not actually insured on the other car at the moment.

I've contacted my insurance company and they've agreed to do the temporary change over for me.

    I don't get it.
You have an extension or not.
You claim you do, but it's worthless.
In that case you don't have it.

That only covers you in Ireland. I asked before about driving a friends Irish registered car in NI.

When I contacted my insurance company, I was told it covers me to drive other cars which I don't own, all over EU, no matter in which country the car is registered.
    Company was Allianz.

I was with AA, can't remember who the insurer was though.

So same as all insurance only way to know for sure is to ask.
