Cant start Windows after shutting down in sleep mode

    Hi folks

Hope you can help and apologies if the wrong forum.

I recently got a new computer, long story short I shut down the comp via sleep mode and now it wont load back up into windows. The screen stays blank on my monitor (except for a flashing underscore) and nothing will bring it back to windows. Iv tried pressing Keys on the keyboard, turning it off and on again opening up the comp to make sure everything is fitted in correctly but nothing has worked. It wont allow me into system settings or allow me to boot a disc either. So I feel like I cant do anything at all to let it to load up normally again

Btw the OS is Windows 7 64 Bit Home Edition (SP 1 version I think)

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Try holding the power button down/in for about 6-7 seconds, when you have the flashing cursor. This should completely power off. Now try starting it.

Already tried this, iv turned the computer completely off, turned power 'switch' behind the computer off and even removed the power cord. Put everything back and tried turning it on again and still the same thing.

    Ill just put together a little list of observations;

What iv noticed the computer does
    - When turning on the computer none of the start up routines on the computer start working (you know how usually sometimes a computer will show motherboard logo, system data etc?)
    - The computer makes a single beep, it DID initially the first time when I tried powering on make one beep then 2-3 consequtive smaller beeps but I opened up the computer to check if the graphics, RAM etc were stable (which they seemed to be)
    - The Screen goes completely black after the beep, leaving only a flashing white underscore on the top left of the screen

    What iv tried doing
    - Pressing Multiple Keyboard keys to see if it happens to make windows or the computer load up
    - Turning the computer off/on again
    - Putting in the Windows CD to see if it boots from the cd: Doesn't work
    - Tried pressing F2, F8 or F12 to see if it runs System settings on startup as they are the usual System keys to press. Doesn't do anything
    - Checking if computer components are secure and not loose (they seem to be secure)

What I can seem to do
    - When the screen is black with the flashing underscore, I can press Alt+Ctl+Delete and it seems to put the computer into 'sleep' mode again. If I press any keys the computer powers back up but it only returns to the black screen with flashing underscore again

I'm really hoping this can be resolved soon, as I had plans with the computer as of tomorrow (Skyrim lol :o)

Try holding down the power button and tapping the F8 button about 5-6 times maybe more maybe less but ya kinda need to just guess/gauge it yourself until the progress bar crawls along the bottom of the screen like it's about to start up. Just keep tapping on F8. don't go trying to press the 2 together or simultaneously or holding 1 down as it'll drive ya mad trying to figure it out. Ya need to hold down Power and tap away on F8. That's the only way I can get my old Laptop to power on. It then starts up grand then for me just as if I've switched it on. It's probably advised against but I can confirm I haven't lost any data by doing so but it might differ from machine to machine. :) It's a suggestion though for ya though. :) I think that's what was happening to me too though a flashing cursor on a blank screen have no idea what the cause of that is though.

Another thing I found is NOT to let the laptop go to sleep or else I'll only have to start it up like that again.

I just see that was 10 days ago lol! I wonder did you manage to fix it?! :)

What that sounds like to me is that your hard drive has been wiped or become corrupt how I have no idea. The same happened to me once. Just beep noises on start up and a black screen. I had to re install.

There's not Mich more I can say. U can try everything but with no installation files the computer mearly will run around in circles looking for it.

Its not even going to POST which is a strange one that iv never experienced. Try the hdd in another system. If its accessable then its a fried motherboard maybe?

Just thinking there, why dont you leave out all the RAM modules to force it into giving a beep code, if it doesnt give a beep its probably truely nackerd.

Go into the BIOs and disable Standby/Sleep mode then try boot the machine. As suggested above hitting F8 and starting Windows normally should get you booting back in to Windows!

Theyve tried boot options but cant access them.

But just noticed you havent said wether you tried pressing DEL to access the bios?
    Yoyo could be onto somethin

Can you specify the make and model ?
If you can not enter the bios it may be possible to remove the cmos battery which should allow the bios to appear.

The flashing underline cursor shows that the computer is unable to find a bootable device.
Normally the manufacturers logo is shown on start up with a list of keys to choose the correct boot sequence.

I have seen this happen on a machine failing to come out of hibernation though, so it could be as simple as the machine failing to wake, seems a bit odd that no other ways such as hitting F8 at startup work though... The problem could possibly be that OP needs to find a PS/2 keyboard and that is the reason they can't access the BIOs/Diagnostics menu.
To OP, Try get your hands on a non USB keyboard (PS/2) i.e: the ones with the round purple plug, sometimes USB keyboards arn't recognised by certain BIOs, or are disabled by default during the boot process

OP have you any other devices plugged in. Eg iPod, ex hard drive, mobile, broadband dongle. i know that if these are plugged in the computer refuses to load. well for me it does.

Just go old fashioned. Wired keyboard, wired mouse if you dont have them.

that to me looks like the OS has become corrupted and a repair should fix it
I know you said you couldn't boot with the cd, have you tried an external cd or tried using older ps/2 keyboard?

There could be some add on card (sound/video/modem - I know ;) ) that is stopping the system from booting, remove them all and try booting again, if it boots put all back in one at a time until it fails to boot again then that's your culprit...

Could also be a memory prob, take all out except one module an do as above..
