If they can be got at the same price Golf for me all the way. Nicer looking, better interior and better residuals than a Focus too.

No contest for me either. I personally think the Focus is a bit of a mess visually, it is trying too hard both inside and out. I know some people like them but I much prefer the more classy and understated Golf.

The Ford is top spec where the VW is just a tarted up Comfortline with a slow engine. What are you basing your decision on, have you driven both? The VW is very capable but just so dull, the Ford's styling, while a bit fussy, is certainly a more interesting design, both inside and out.

The VW would probably be a fine ownership proposition, but every time a Titanium Focus pulled up alongside I would wonder if I made the right choice.

What special Golf is it before the R line pack? Unless it's a highline I'd go with the focus. Also the focus is more powerful, has a better spec and a six speed box which is handy for motorway runs.

I'd go for the Focus because in Titanium form it is well kitted out. It would have to be the saloon though, there is just too much going on with the rear of the hatchback.

Golf is just too conservative for me.

Is that still the case? Surely there wouldn't be much in it though?

Ford are about to release a 1.0l Focus with 123hp avail end of march which may be a bit late.
You'd stated already you don't do much mileage isn't the 1.2tfsi Golf 2k cheaper than the diesel.
That might be a better bet than the diesel focus

Didnt think they were selling the titanium model in Ireland? Thought the new focus only went as far as Zetec?!

I agree with you going for it with the titanium but I think the opposite of the looks, I think the saloon looks like crap.

Thanks for all your replies. People are very good to take the time.

Edition-R Golf is basically the Comfortline with Blue tooth, touch screen radio.
Fog lights & a few extra 'bits' on outside.

Titanium Focus hatchback is available here.
    Have driven 1.6 95 & 115 Focus and Golfs TDI 105 and 1.2TSI 105 so i'm doing my homework.

Liked the 115 Focus but not too keen on the new central dash - bit too flashy for me. Maybe I'd get used to it.

Have heard from VW sales of a few people who have had trouble with DPF on Golf Diesel - one doing some part-time evening work delivering pizza!

Also I have friend who is mechanic with rural main Ford dealer.
He told me a lot of their clients do low enough mileage and he hasn't had any problems with the DPF on the new Focus.

If you do low miles, just don't buy a modern diesel. Ford do not have a magic design immune to DPF problems.

Did you make a decision OP?

I just put a deposit on a 1.2tsi Golf Edition-R in Silver. It's personal preference at the end of the day but for me the Golf wins hands down over the Focus. The R-line bodykit looks stunning, but in a typical understated German way. Not too flashy, but confident all the same. Same with the interior, very German but subtle and practical.

The Ford drives well but personally I never liked the look of the focus and never really came around to the Ford interiors.

I'm sure either car will suit your needs though.

    Don't kill me! :D

I wanted grey but faced a 12 week wait and needed to change my car in Jan. I saw it in the flesh and silver actually looks really really nice on this model!

I bet back in '98 all those MkIV people thought the same... :D

In all seriousness, enjoy the new toy. The lines of the MkVI do suit the silver somewhat better, let's just hope it ages better than it's predecessors. ;)

Definitely the golf my parents ordered the 1.6 TDI r edition also in silver and its way better than the ford they test drove the focus me also but i thought it was very uncomfortable compared to the golf and the focus was very tinny and the golf was much more solid on the road
