PC freezing in middle of games

    hi,

My pc keeps freezing in a specific spot in modern warfare 3, and in some other games in random spots. Ive cleaned all the fans, reseated the cpu cooler (just in case) and turned them up full speed so i dont think its overheating thats causing it. I downloaded all the up to date drivers this evening and installed them but it made no difference. Any ideas as to what could be causing it?

    Cheers,
    Paul

Spec: intel q6600 @stock speed with akasa ak-965 cooler
    4gb OCZ ddr2 Ram
xfx 650i ultra mobo (chipset software 15.51 i think)
POV nvidia 8800gts 512mb @stock speed, running resolution 1600x900, latest drivers as of yesterday
    XP sp3 32bit

I know you've reseated the CPU cooler, but that still sounds like overheating to me. Maybe try running mprime or similar and see if it happens. If not, it's worth looking at your graphics card and maybe reverting to older drivers. The 8800 is old enough at this stage.

I'm sure there's a program that will record your GC temps. I think you really need to rule out overheating as it seems like the most likely cause.

i installed speedfan and my gpu is reading at around 52 (100% fan from startup) when i switch the pc back on after it freezes, my cpu is about 42 so there both ok i think, seeing that the 8800gts idles around 50ish as standard and my cpu idles at mid 30s.

I know the hardware is old but i cant afford to upgrade anything at the moment. According to speed fan my +12v line (corsair tx650w PSU) is reading 11.35 and 10.5v? Could it be my PSU?

    Thanks for the replies,
    Paul

    Yes - that wouldn't help.

That PSU shouldn't have any issue keeping that rig stable in my view (Corsair are up there as the best), as mentioned I'd say its your CPU cooler (I had a very similiar problem where the games kept freezing, the stock Intel cooler was full of black dirt :O), did you re aply thermal paste when you reseated the cooler, could have been that the old stuff has "worn out", can happen over a while.
I fixed my issue replacing the cooler, but as you have an aftermarket one it may only need more thermal comp applied

Maybe check the event logs too.

It could also be a bios setting, could the motherboard think some things over heating and shutting down? If your temps are stable it may not be overheating as such.

Maybe check ram for errors with memtest86?

Ran prime95 for about 3 hours (would have left it longer but i wanted to sleep :P ), cpu hit 60degrees top for short periods (30 seconds - 1 minute) for some calculations but otherwise remained low 50s. Is that ok temps?

Think ive it narrowed down now to the drivers, last night i got a BSOD saying nv4_disp so im in the process of uninstalling all drivers, running driversweep in safe mode and reinstalling them again. Will update when i test it out later.

    Yeah could be drivers...
But reseat your graphics card too, solved a similar problem for me.

run furmark at full settings to torture test your GPU and see if the bug pops back up.

well after reinstalling every driver i tried running modern warfare again, no one crash while i played through so im putting it down to a messed up driver. temps according to speedfan were
    CPU min:34 max 47.5 mean 34.4
    GPU min 45 max 60 mean 45
    System(?) min -13 max 4 mean -12

Ill run furmark again during the week and see if it reappears

    Thanks for all the help
