Securely wiping iPhone prior to return

    Hi everyone.

I have an iPhone 4 with iOS 5,

As advised, I have been told to wipe my iPhone prior to sending for repair. This is important for me because I have a lot of confidential work info etc on the phone.

Is it enough to just sync it and erase all data after backing up using iTunes or on the phone itself with "erase all contents and settings"? Or is it a bit like windows, ie when you delete a file, its not really deleted/written over, just the file sector is designated as empty and thus the data can still be recovered.

Thanks if anyone knows the answer!

Is it being replaced or repaired?

If it is going back to Apple for replacement I would imagine the hard drive in it would be destroyed?
This was the case with an external HDD I returned. I was told the confidentially act ensures manufacturers have to do this.
