    Hi All,

Looked at friends computer. they couldn't open files. The files all had .pip extentions. I'm still using XP so windows 7 is still all very strange to me and I never heard of a .pip file before. It did turn out that the 'office package' had expired, product key request etc which didn't help. I googled .pip files and am still a little perplexed but I'll get there one day lol however......

My question is when creating an office document using windows7 does it always save as a .pip file instead of a .doc file which I'm used to.

    Thanks for reading.

Looks like it is just Office 2007 configuration files? Source.
Sounds like they arn't saving documents correctly, or only saving settings somehow. A PEBKAC problem if you will :). Try get them onto LibreOffice if they only have a trial edition of Office

Thank you for that. this LibreOffice sounds interesting. I actually never heard of it before. I will mention it to them. However I did google it just now and a few people seem to have had problems with file association, not being able to easily open .doc files with it etc. All the same its still very interesting to see a free package out there.
    Thanks again.

This is probably what it is , but it's not a document.

    http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/pip
File Type Office Personalized Settings File
    Developer Microsoft
    Popularity 3 stars
    Category Settings Files
    File Description

Preference file used by Microsoft Office programs to store "Personalized Menus and Toolbars" settings; created by each Office application by evaluating what menu commands are used most; only commonly used commands are displayed in a shortened version of each menu.

PIP files are saved in the Application Data\Microsoft\Office directory and are named [program].pip. For example, Microsoft Word's menu settings file may be named "Word.pip" or "Word2.pip."

NOTE: The menu options in Office programs can be manually customized by selecting View → Toolbars → Customize, then clicking the "Options" tab.

Hi Capt'n. That was very interesting too. I think their young son had created a document and appeard to have somehow accidently saved it as a .pip file.
If that was the case I am guessing now that if they strip out the Office package (which had expired anyway), although they won't get that document back they should have no more problems but will obviously have to install a new package of some sort as discussed earlier.
    Thanks for the reply.

LibreOffice is the successor of OpenOffice that is updated more regularly and deals with Doc/Docx, Xls, Xlsx etc fine, can even save doc, docx etc fine

Thanks, I'm hoping they'll go for that. It should be sufficient for their needs and I know they don't want to purchase anything....and knowing the way the kids are with the machine no doubt they will find a way of messing up the package again in due course:D. Thanks.
