Same STB as the LIDL one? A bit odd if so - usually ALDI and LIDL keep their prices identical.

Still a decent price even if it's a tenner more expensive than the same one that was in Lidl,I expect them to be gone in about 2 minutes when they go on sale.

Here's a pic of the tv,it is saorview approved.

That picture has DVD Video written on the bottom of the tv beside where saorview and usb are written, but no mention of inbuilt dvd player on ad.

Aldi Uk are doing what seems to be the same set (£299) but with the word FreeView instead of SaorView. I emailed Tevion to see if the irish version had DVB-T2 also but they denied any knowledge of any 42" TV. Their support site only listed up to 37" sets with different UK and RoI versions of each.
If anyone knows whether they are T2, I'd love to know.

It says DVBT-not DVD.I have the brochure and the pic is bigger and clearer. It has saorview written on the pic also.

Anyone know if the USB PVR can record a terrestrial channel (I assume it can only record from the TV tuner) while you're watching something else from the other inputs.

Well spotted, underneath the SaorView logo.

It doesn't have a DVD player built in. There is an Irish and a UK model. They are made by UMC in Slovakia who include the inbuilt DVD as an option. From my reading of the manual, it doesnt have one in this case.

It does have a USB port that you can play XVID MOV VOB MPG and MP4 media files.

It allows you to record to the USB device connected.

    Heres the manual

It would seem that they used the same basic image for their brochures and website and merely photoshoped the appropriate logos in.
A quick glance through both Irish and UK manuals makes no mention of DVB-T2 or FreeView HD. It seems odd to make a 1920x1080P TV that wouldn't get HD in UK

European mainland model. Not a UK model is the reasonable explanation.

CI+ includes MHEG5 and CI+ is replacing CI. CI is mandated in EU for all TV 16" and larger I think.

It's not that fantastic value. My son got a 42" LG for about €350.

I have suspicion that currently you need ethernet as well as DVB-T2 to get UK "Freeview HD" certification. Sweden is only starting to deploy DVB-T2. Next year some more European countries and Russia will be deploying DVB-T2.
    Possible DVB-T2
    # Italy: one multiplex, soft launch in October 2010
    # Sweden: two multiplexes, full launch in November 2010
    # Finland: five multiplexes, soft launch in January 2011, full launch in February 2011
    # Ukraine: four DVB-T2 multiplexes × 167 transmission sites, 150 of which have been officially launched on October 10, 2011
    # Denmark: one multiplex, with TV2 Danmark in HD will launch April 2012
    # Malaysia (possible)
    # South Africa (definite)
    # Croatia (tests, approval)
    # Serbia: Adopted.
    # Russia: Approved Sept 2011. Some sites running before approval
    # Turkey (Tests)

This could even be "product dumping" or "inventory clearance" as all manufacturers will be switching to only making sets with DVB-T2 (which will also work on DVB-T of course, MPEG4 and MPEG2).

Anyone near border areas or Southwest South East coast should hold of on TV purchase till July/August 2012 to get better deals of TV with Saorview and "freeview HD" ability. It's likely all European TVs will have CI+, DVB-T2 and MPEG4 so will thus have MHEG5 and some reasonable degree of Freeview HD and Saorview compatibility even if not approved but "Caveat Emptor" applies for any un-certified purchase.

    Where? That's cheap.

These days the majority of people are just concerned with price and not specs,if it picks up saorview they'll be happy.A 42" full HD tv for less than €400 which can be picked up instore suits a lot of folk, less hassle than searching online or driving for miles to a superstore in search of a deal.
I'd go for one only that I have a 47" LED already.

It was some months ago in Currys, Limerick. So was a local pickup. At the time Argos and Powercity were similar price.

It's HD Ready rather than Full HD, but do agree with the local instore pick up and of course the 3 year warranty included (how much would that cost from Currys/ Argos?).

We're very tempted, but (and I never thought I'd say this) I actually think it's too big for us!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

42" is pretty much a minimum size for 16:9 and HD in a living room, unless it's a rabbit hutch. It may be too big for a study, kitchen, bedroom.

It's 1920x1080 resolution, which is real HDTV.

But I think not great value, just reasonable.

Surely that's subjective - we're managing alright with a 32" CRT at the moment! Isn't it a balancing act between the closest seats and those furthest away? (Genuine question for watty/ other techies not being facetious, as I'm sure I've read about problems with too big a tellies causing headaches etc)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,568 ✭✭✭Gerry Wicklow

What sometimes confuses people is that TV screens are measured across the diagonal (corner to corner) so in practice a 42" 16:9 tv is only 3-4" taller than a 32" 4:3. Anything smaller than 40" would be a waste of HD unless you sit 3 foot from the screen.

I sit 9' from my 52" Sony. HD is fab. at this distance. Sd is very good but improves further when I sit 12' from tv. As most viewing is in HD I never move viewing position.:)
