Most brands will be very reliable these days.

I wouldn't buy a laptop purely based on the brand.
To me the spec would be much more important, of course you do have to be careful.
For example I would never buy an emachine.

First I would decide on a budget, then try and find the best spec laptop in that budget.
For me good brands would be,
Asus, Dell, HP, Toshiba, Samsung, MSI, Sony and it pains me to say Apple

But that wouldn't stop me from buying an Acer or Lenovo or most other brands if I found a good deal on one. I would make sure though that the laptop I was getting was reliable. What I mean by that is, when I find a laptop that interests me I google it and try and find some reviews on it to make sure it won't blow up on me :)

I found http://www.notebookcheck.net/ to be very good for reviews on laptops, mobile processors and mobile graphics cards.

Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Sony are solid. Dell is ok. Asus and Lenovo the best value of the most reliable laptops.

Acer I would avoid - you'll probably be ok but I have seen a lot fail - why take the chance.

OP i think you'd be better off giving us some more details about what you're looking for...as you can see, us just naming brands isn't really going to get you anywhere!

    Budget
    Size (mobile Vs large)
    Battery life needed
    Intended usage
    Special requirements( Games etc)

very happy with Advent (PC World)

I would have said Toshiba was the best however the last laptop I got was a toshiba and I had battery problems and needed replacing and I know somebody with a Toshiba and battery gone in just over a year.

Advent is years old and battery still going strong
