I have an interest in the game but never got the chance to follow it, I'd like to change that now though.

What months do the seasons run from?
    Who are the marquee teams?
    Who are the marquee players?
    Whats the salary cap?
    Who are favourites this year?
ESPN besides, is there anywhere to watch games in this country?

    Hey paddy
season should have started by now, but there's a dispute over pay causing a lockout (as nialo pointed out). It's probably going to be sorted so that it will resume around Xmas (at least I'm hoping so!).

For watching games I usually get them from NBA.com season pass, or if you're feeling bold, you can torrent them (or feeling like a night owl you can p2p them). ESPN is the only TV station I know of that shows them.

For best players and teams, depends who you ask really. Most would say: Miami Heat (with Lebron & Wade as best players), Chicago Bulls (with Rose and Noah) and Boston Celtics (Rondo, Allen, Green...) on the East Coast. On the West you have the LA Lakers(Bryant, and most of the team really), Dallas Mavericks(Nowitski, Kidd, Terry...), OKC Thunder (Durant, Westbrook...).
IMO the great thing about NBA compared to football for eg is that many of the teams are loaded with great players and rarely do you get a crap game. The season is usually packed with games too (between 3-12 games per day), so if you just watch the highlights on nba.com main page you'll see some great stuff every day. It was too much for me at one stage last year, takes some devotion:p

Anyway, I think the Thunder will be good this year, and the Heat will be strongest contenders but doesnt mean anything until the 'finals' stages (post season it's called). I think the Mavs were 14-1 to win just before the post season started last year - on paddypower.com anyway.

I recon the easiest way to get into it is to just watch the 2011 all-star game for best players and then watch highlights of last years' post season to get a start on the good teams.
