I've driven both and personally, I think the hatchback civic is much better.

I had an 06 for 2.5 years. No issues. Quite a roomy car actually. I was getting 43 mpg on a 80 mile per day round trip. Pokey as well. Better built than the hatchback. I wasn't too mad about the electric power steering but most cars seem to have that now.
