Lovely idea for a honeymoon. I'm a big fan of Austria! What date are you thinking of going? It might be a good idea to look up school holidays in other European countries as well, if you can avoid the Irish, Dutch and English half term then it'll make things a bit more romantic for you - no gangs of school kids around the place.

Two resorts I'd recommend are Saalbach and Alpbach. The skiing in Saalbach is great - when I lived in Ireland we went there 2/3 times a year as we had access to a holiday home there. I just love it! There are three valleys joined in to one ski area (i.e. they are connected by bus and all are included in the lift ticket) so you can ski every day and not ski the same slopes twice. The village has got some good bars, restaurants and hotels or lots of guest houses is you like Are you a beginner or a good skier? That makes a difference on what resorts are good or not. Saalbach is also near the Eagle's Nest (the second seat of government for the Nazis) which has a fascinating museum - if you're in to that kind of thing and don't just want to ski.

Alpbach is better for beginner skiers and wouldn't have as much slopes to ski but it's more romantic, a small village with some nice hotels and restaurants. Could be worth checking out.

I've been to a few other resorts in Austria but they're the two I'd reccomend. Both of those you would fly in to Salzburg to get to and I'd really recommend staying in Salzburg for a night or two. It's a really lovely city.

Have you considered Switzerland? They have great ski resorts, especially Interlaken/Wengen in the Jungfrauregion - one of the ski Olympics and World Ski Championships locations, and with the longest downhill course in the world!

Thanks for the reply's. Well we are unfortunate with our dates because we clashing with school holidays, so it is a more expensive time. No I haven't looked up Switzerland at all I must check that place out along with Saalbach and Alpbach in Austria. We are beginners at the skiing.

I was looking at flights and I don't seem to see any thing that flies to Salzburg from Ireland. If i book with Topflight they have all their flights with Aer lingus going in there. How would I fly into Salzburg? or should I just book a package holiday with Topflight?

We used to fly Ryanair or Aer Lingus into Salzburg but I haven't done it in a few years - I know they only did it at certain times of year when we went but I'm not sure if they still do. A package holiday can be good when you're first time skiers because you get to meet people (they have evening entertainment organised) and they'll often book your ski hire and classes too in the package as well as airport transfers. If it's your first time it may be good to just have it booked for you, although you would save money booking yourselves. It's less hassle to go with a package, especially after the stress of organising a wedding.

When my family go to Saalbach now they fly to Munich with Aer Lingus and hire a car and drive from there instead of from Salzburg. It's easy to find accommodation online if you wanted, lots of people have holiday homes they rent out. If it were me I'd prefer to be in a holiday home by ourselves then in a hotel, just to have some time together but each to their own - hotels can be more pampering!

You'll have a ball - The most fun I've had skiing is the week I first learned - hilarious! and I was in a class with a great bunch of people. The first day I skied I was so tired I feel asleep on the hotel bed and had proper hallucinations that my family had come in and told me they were going for dinner without me. I'm jealous now, I would love to be going to Austria soon. I've always had the loveliest holidays in Austria, both in the summer and winter. :D

My family and I used to go to Kitzbuhel. It's really lovely but expensive. The skiing is great though, anything from baby slopes to black diamond runs. I would go back there in a heartbeat.

Personally I would fly to Zurich and get the train to your resort... it’s what we do every year, works out far cheaper than booking a package holiday!
Plus the flight times on package holiday are always crap and you lose a full days skiing. With regard to accommodation we always book through the town website and get excellent apartments. St Anton is fab, expensive but worth it (difficult skiing though).. Saalbach is lovely too much cheaper than St Anton, and has a lovely feel to it – skiing is great for beginners etc...

    hi op,
if its your first skiing holiday and its your honeymoon i would suggest going with a package- take the stress out of travelling to a place you don't know and they will point you in right direction for ski hire etc.
for high end consider irish company highlife- don't think they do austria but may give you a more pampering holiday- i've never been with them but like what i read.
alternatively pick a place in austria and go for a nice hotel- i honeymooned in one resort but stayed in b+b- ended up leaving as didn't like it, i hadn't realised that my expectations were higher than normal holiday for honeymoon as would normally stay in b+b
bet of luck and enjoy- best holidays around!
