Male + Dublin + Provisional = !

Rightio, finally got around to doing my provisional theory test and getting the licence (Male, 23, No convictions, 1st Prov) . Saw no point in doing it till I'd hit 23 and the insurance break kicked in as I'd been looking at about 3-5k for any sort of insurance prior to that.

Folks are with RSA through Cornmarket, and I'd planned to go on my mothers insurance - a retired teacher with 70% NCB - as second named driver on a 2004 1.8 Merc C180 Kompressor. I realise its a crazy size of a car to start off with (not to mention RWD) but I've to work with what I've got.

I'd planned on just getting insured for a month so as to get the proper benefit of lessons but it seems that they'll only insure me for the year - allowing us to claim back the 'unused' months if we cancel the policy in Dec 2012. I'd be looking at about 750-800 p.a. This amounts to giving them an interest free loan of 650 odd quid for the year in a time when cash is tight...

I then went looking at a banger with the cheapest possible insurance. Settled on either a 1l Polo or Fiesta as something moderately respectable at the very bottom of the scale. Threw in me details on chill.ie (parked D6 on a public road, alarm w/ no immobiliser, 3rd party fire and theft) and came up with this

    Lloyds € 1,402.77
    AXA DriveFirst Basic € 2,050.35
Aviva Broker Motor Choice € 2,109.24
    AXA MotorFirst Standard € 2,143.00
Aviva Broker Motor Choice Value € 2,198.05
    AXA MotorFirst Plus € 2,213.04

2 grand to insure a ****ing shoebox? My 19 year old sister was quoted less than this... Is this as good as I can expect? Does everyone end up having to pay this bull****? My 22 year old (female) mate pays about 800 quid a year on her Yaris. I know the acturial tables are loaded against young males, but this seems to be ripping the piss completely.

Your first mistake was using Chill.ie

    They are USELESS...........

I don't see anything surprising in those quotes other then €1400 from lloyds being very cheap. If all the circumstances are correct them you'd be doing well to only pay €1400!

Seems to be pretty decent prices for a first timer. What made you think waiting till 23 was a good idea, gaining your no claims bonus is more important in bringing your policy prices down than age. And even with age you don't really get a break until your 25 and at that it's nothing off your policy.

Just for comparison 10 years ago I paid 4000 púnt to be a named driver on a 2 year old 1.3 Escort. So in reality the prices you are getting are pretty decent.

wasnt there a European court ruling that the insurance industry has to stop discriminating between male and female, so males will get lower motor tax but on the other side of it higher life assurance

Any idea on when/if that is due to come online?
If it were coming soon then you would be as well hold off till then seeing as you have waited this long anyhow.

I'm presuming a 1.0l Polo or similar is the best car to be looking at from an insurance point of view? I just can't get my head around how my insurance is almost twice the price of a woman up to two years younger than me.... I don't give a crap what I drive until I get my full licence, but I would have thought I'd be able to get on the road in some sort of glorified vacuum cleaner for under 1k... I mean I'm 23 looking at a granny car, not some 18 year old looking at a VTEC hot-hatch.

2012 and won't make any difference to the OP's quotes, if anything they will probably increase but they definitely won't decrease. It simply means women will have to pay the same as men (IE: More).

In any regards €1400 is an exceptional price and the OP should bite their hand off at that.

You have no driving history which is most important, your age is a much smaller factor.

Not spending 4 grand that I didn't have at age 18 was a deciding factor. Insurance would literally be triple the book value of the car. How the hell can anyone get on the road at these prices?

Your insurance wouldn't have been 4 grand at 18, my brother is the same age as you and he got on his own policy on a 1.2 Clio for around €2500 at 18.

Took out my first car ins in nov 2010, 3rd party fire n theft for a 00 reg corsa 1ltr cost me 1500 with aviva.
Just renewed it with axa for less than 800. However if I had put my ex on it as a named driver this time round I wouldve knocked it down by another 110 euro. Go figure. Both of us have learner permits

Couldn't get insured as a named driver on my parents policy till I'd hit 23. Was quoted between 3 and 4k on a Peugeot 206 @ 19 in my own name - and that was with plenty ringing around; the online sites wouldn't even quote me.

Strange are you in a high risk area or something?

I to got my first car at the very height of the crazy insurance premiums, just over 4k on a 99 1.0 corsa...and I was 22!

It was worth it now though as insurance and for the most part, price just isn't an issue any more.

1400 bucks is actually not too bad for a first time driver with no experience and that Lloyds policy, presumably through Asgard isnt a bad policy either. If you want to get it down lower then you can probably increase your excess.

Hopefully in the next 12 months you will pass your test and remain claims free so you will see a drastic drop in your rates.

As for being older,Asgard recently switched their minimum premium for first time drivers (17/18 year olds) to 2500 so 1400 is fairly alright and as draffodx said,if you can get it at that price, bite their hand off!

Thats normal IMO. I recently checked out insurance online for a relative, 19, provisional, 00 1.2 clio, quote was over 4 k. His sister is 21 , provisional, and actually has a 00 1.2 clio insured for 900 odd euro.

Ranelagh, Dublin 6 so presumably not. There was a fecking Michelin star restaurant around the corner from me till a year ago so its hardly boyracer central. I'm quite close to Leeson street, but its D6 rather than D2 so I was hoping I'd escape that insurance catchment area.

I reckon I'm best off getting insured as named driver on my parents car and working toward my full licence if the alternative is to just grin and bear it. I don't really need a car being so close to town/college, but I figured with the very real possibility of Oz/Canada in the next year or two a full license would be invaluable.

Ahhhh.... Voluntary Excess is at €0 which might have something to do with it.

Yeah, this is whats baffling me. I fully understand the acturial risks involved in Male Vs. Female, and how the policies are loaded against us, but I'm absolutely flabbergasted at the male/female differential.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,925 ✭✭✭Otis Driftwood

Just to be clear,There is still the standard excess on the policy.

Say the standard is €250 and you choose voluntary of €300,your claims excess will be €550.

It may be a way though to further reduce the price.

I bought my first car at 20 yrs of age and had two years built up as a named driver on my mother's car. The cheapest I got on a 997cc Micra was £3,500 for just third party! Came down a fair bit after the first year though. OP seems to be getting decent quotes as a first timer

I understand it's a piss-off, but putting it bluntly, the option is to either get the best price for insurance and pay it, or else not pay it and stay off the road.

We all know insurance prices aren't fair, but if you want to drive in life, at some point you have to bite the bullet and get bent over by the insurance companies. The first policy is always the worst, so best to get it over with quickly.

    I paid 1750, 18, provisional license, ford fiesta 1.25

so waiting til 23 was silly. You have to build up NCB.

    On your own policy???

yes, no NCB or named driving either.

1.5k on a 1.5 Nissan Almera, learner permit and 0yrs NCB. Have both my parents insured under me too, think that made it cheaper.

    *EDIT* 19 years old too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

My first policy was €1850, 23 yr old, 1.4 Golf, Provisional License, Fully Comp, no NCD or previous named experience.

Came down €300 three months in after I passed my test, so got a nice rebate for that.

Oh and that was with Hibernian.

My first car at 18 was a 3 year old 1.1 fiat punto. 2,900 punts, TPF&T.

It might be in the OP's interest to look at getting an older car for himself for less than a grand. The first year costs might be a little higher, but over two or 3 years, you'll end up saving money (plus you have your own car).

In addition, you will bump and scrape and do stupid things to your first car. Everyone does. I would rather bounce a 1999 Fiesta off a few kerbs and pillars than a 2004 Merc!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,834 ✭✭✭Welease

Would it not be worth considering getting your full licence before purchasing your own car if the cost is an issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,361 ✭✭✭YouTookMyName

1700 1.6 Focus 19. Quinn. Full licence No NCB. In 2007.

    In 1991 I was 20 and I paid £2066 for third party only on a 1984 1.3 Corolla saloon that cost me £1800 :mad::mad::mad::mad:

    2.5k for a 1.2 Ibiza when I was 19... i think you're getting a steal there imo OP

    3800 on a 1.1 fiesta in 04, i was 18 with a prov and no NCB

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭veetwin

Jeez OP you are getting a bargain if can insure a car on your own for less than €1500. Male - No licence - Dublin - no NCB -what did you realistically think it was going to be?

FWIW I paid £1700 back in 1993 for my first insurance on a POS Renault 5 and I had a full licence and 3 years named driving. That was a fair ball of cash in 1993!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 134 ✭✭james1410

my first car was a 1993 jap corolla 1.5 and my insurance was 2800 euro third party fire and theft i was 19 at the time back in 2009 it was quinn direct and i was on a provisional! looking at what some other people payed it looks like i did well to get that quote!

i had a crash the same year which put my premiums way up so i waited 6 months and they had dropped considerably so i reinsured on july 2010 with axa for 2013 euro giving a 400 euro deposit on a 1994 ford escort 1.3 a year later and im at 2000 euro on my 1990 ford granada 2.0L (which was stolen and now recoverd)

also it helps to pay monthly!

every detail you give the insurer will affect your premium age location type of car engine cc licence ocupation ect..:(
