Referred to Consultant - confused about my options

The last time I visited hospital was about 20 years ago. You just walked in, signed a piece of paper that you were insured, and money wasn't discussed after that. It's all changed now and I confused about my options :(

My GP (a locum, acutally) has referred me to a consultant dermatologist but left me free to choose which one I want to go with. It's a 'just in case' referral so I don't think it's urgent.

I have medical insurance (Quinn) but my funds are limited so I want to choose the one that will cost me the least cash. The hospitals nearest me are Beaumont, Beaumont Private, and the Bons Secours.

When I rang Quinn to make discuss payment etc, they said there was no excess in Beaumont, they're never heard of Beaumont Private, and it was a €125 excess in the Bons.

According to the Quinn website, there's no dermatologists in Beaumont participating with Quinn, and there's only one dermatologist in the Bons signed up with Quinn.

The Beaumont websites (public and private) list 4 public consultants and they share 1 of these with Beaumont private. Is that the consultant I ring first, and should I ring her public office first? Or her private office?

So I guess I'm just looking for some general advice on choosing a consultant. And is dermatology that rare a speciality in Ireland? And do consultants in general not like signing up with Quinn?

    Thanks in advance.

I have the impression you need to see someone for a consultation and not for admission , therefore the cost of a bed is irrelevant.
There is no private hospital in Beaumont but there is a consultants private clinic which is where you will be seen if you decide to go there.

Best advice I can give is ring around the consultants and ask if they accept Quinn payments ? One way or another you may well end up saddled with an excess.
