Lecture: ‘The Lighter Side of History: Irish society and politics in The Leprechaun Cartoon Monthly 1905-1915’

Speaker: Dr Ciarán Wallace, IRCHSS Postdoctoral Fellow at Trinity College Dublin

Before the turmoil of the 1916 Rising and War of Independence Irish cartoonists dealt with topics such as popular celebrities, votes for women and political corruption. Using illustrations from The Leprechaun Cartoon Monthly, this talk will recall a time when Home Rule was the burning issue, Unionists sat in City Hall and Labour was a worrying new force. Clever cartoons by Thomas Fitzpatrick, John Fergus O’Hea (‘Spex’) and others give a fascinating insight into daily life in Edwardian Dublin.

    Thursday 17 November, 19.30
    Free admission, all welcome.
