Anywhere in Dublin that fits GPS trackers to cars? Is it a one off fee or subscription? Can I find the cars location on my pc?

I have one of these fitted to my car. (bought elsewhere for about €80) I bought a meteor sim and threw a tenner on it. I have to top it up once every 6 months to keep the sim active. Very cheap tracking solution.

Did you fit it yourself or is it a garage job?

Fitted it myself...took about an hour tops. I didn't wire up the fuel pump as I didn't want to be snipping wires on a brand new car and voiding the warranty, plus some people had highlighted issues if I was to shut the car down while a thief was driving it away and they crashed.

I had this one installed when I was getting an alarm fitted. Bought it myself on good old e-bay for about €40.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=68192840&postcount=1

However its since stopped working properly so I'm not sure whether thats to do with being not a great device or just cos I got it from e-bay cheap!

Anyway I can still get a text GPS reading from it by calling the device but when I send command texts it doesn't respond! Doing it again I'd probably get better quality one maybe like fletch fitted.
Edit: and another thing the Geo-Fence feature never worked!

The geo fence feature works brilliantly on mine (not rubbing it in sorry)...let the OH half take the car to work one day. Set it up to alert me once the car moved from work...in the evening, the car hadn't even got out of the car park and I had a text letting me know it was on the move.
By any chance, was your car battery disconnected at all....perhaps the system has forgotten the admin phone number (not sure how yours works but mine treats the first phone who ever rang it as the admin phone)

The GPS tracker is best thing I ever bought, car was stolen last night. Broke into house in the middle of the night and took the keys without waking anyone.

Guards were able to recover the car based on GPS location I gave them from the tracker within a few hours, luckily was parked up in overground parking at some random houseing estate!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah not sure about the battery thing it has an internal battery bit like a mobile the 12v from car just keeps battery charged. It doesn't response to any kind of texts anymore but responses when you call it with location (thankfully!)

Were you tempting faith by saying you had a tracker fitted yesterday and your car was stolen last night?

    Glad it was recovered.

What's the best way of hard wiring them into the car? I was looking on eBay and was thinking of picking up one of the cheap ones to try it out. The battery time on them seems to only be 48hrs. If the car was parked up for a few days that would be a bit of a problem or could you hard wire it directly to the battery?

Yeah you could but it would drain your main battery...think there putting out 110ma which would drain a battery in 4 - 5 days. I have one myself...not fitted yet but will do at weekend I reckon after reading the above!

Is the geofence on yours via SMS or GPRS? I have a similar one the TLT-2H haven't had a look at the geo fence..general feedback for mine is it only works on SMS, and I don't want to use GPRS as the texts are free on my tracker SIM.

The geofence on mine is via SMS...I don't actually use the geofence feature...I use the move feature on mine. The geofence requires you to input the lat/longs of the geofence whereas the move feature just simply alerts if the car moves from within 200m of its location when set. (I think that makes sense).

what way would you recommend wiring it? Tap into the cigeratte lighter and hide behind the dash?

They are programmed to start up from ignition, so wont drain the battery.

Are you sure....mine works all the time whether the ignition is on or not...they'd be pretty useless if they only worked while the ignition was on.

depends on how you wire it ;)

This will cause battery drain. Whats useless about it being driven away and activating GPS. most systems work this way.

You can wire it your way but the potential issues in terms of power are obvious.

thats as easy as any! Sometimes there's a circuit live from extras not on your car...e.g airbag or ac... I've an aux fuse box to install as I've a few accessories.

Well as soon as the car is switched off you can't track it?

We may be talking about x2 different system here. I can see where you are coming from. But I know of more sophisticated ones.

not true...most of them have a built in battery that last around 30 hours.

Mine has a battery backup alright....never thought of wiring it to the switched live....but then again I wouldn't be able to change the settings on it without turning on the car....on my system, I can changes any of the settings using my phone whenever I want (as it's wired to permanent live)

You can change them as long as the battery holds...I ordered a 2300mah 3.7v battery off dealextrme! The one in mine is 700mah so this should last a few days

It's about twice the size of the gps unit..but it doesn't matter where I'm placing it!

Id go with Erins option, last thing you want is to be jumping you battery in Dublin Airport on return from a holiday at 6am in the morning :D

Yeah, most of them if wired right will also have up to a 3 day battery that gets recharged every time the car is turned on.

Yep, all locks have been changed, house and car! Have to start thinking about changing the VRS now... is it worth the worry/risk!

Anyone could do it tbh....just need to find a 12V permanently live wire and tap into it to power the unit and that's it....

I assume it comes with instructions on how to do this yeah?

i work for a leaflet company doing multidrops, recently our boss has decided to fit gps trackers in our new vans in 2013 im doing my homework now on these, as we sometimes have some time to kill before going back to our regional depot, (co. cork) we generally fill in the time by doing our private chores in the vans supplied, dont slag me off on this please, its just that every little job has some kind of perk, we dont do this all of the time just sometimes when traffic allows us. im looking into gps jammers for that little time we have to spare, what happens on my bosses monitor when a gps jammer is plugged into the cigarette lighter, would he be aware of this device plugged in? also something else do gps trackers work in enclosed car parks? i would like to hear your replies on this please.

I know these are illegal in the UK, I'd assume its the same over here. Regardless these things are nearly always used for dodgy practices, for that reason you won't be using boards to help you in that.
